Men's Basketball Welcomes Southern Miss for Wednesday Night Clash

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama men's basketball is set to welcome Southern Miss for a Thursday night showdown at 7 p.m. CT in the Mitchell Center.

Last Time Out

South Alabama led by as many as 10 in the first half and owned a 39-33 advantage at halftime, but Old Dominion thrashed the Jaguars on the glass and limited USA to 30 percent shooting in the second half. After Old Dominion forced overtime, the Jags were held scoreless in the extra period and suffered their first conference defeat.


Notes You Need to Know

  •  South Alabama leads the country in turnovers per game, averaging 8.9 per contest. The Jags have yet to log a negative assist-to-turnover ratio this season and have committed eight turnovers or less in three of the last five games. 
  • Graduate forward Judah Brown has been lights out from behind the arc since returning for his fifth year of college basketball and third year with the Jags. Brown, a Bermuda Dunes, Calif. native, averages 10.8 points per game while leading the Sun Belt and ranking sixth in the nation in three-point percentage (46.7). Brown has knocked down 49 total three-pointers this season, and the Jags are 10-3 when he makes two three-pointers or more in a game. Brown surpassed his career-high against Mobile, logging 24 points on 7-of-9 shooting from behind the arc.
  • JJ Wheat is one of the most efficient players in the entire country. Wheat ranks 33rd in the country and first in the Sun Belt in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.0) (A:52 TO:17). Additionally, Wheat ranks fifth in the conference in steals per game (1.7)
  •  The Jags fell 20 spots in the NET rankings to No.102, which ranks second among Sun Belt teams. Additionally, the Jags dropped to No.112 in the Kenpom rankings. 
  •  Junior UAB transfer Barry Dunning Jr. has had a dominant start to conference play, averaging 15.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, while shooting 50.8 percent from the field in five Sun Belt games. The Mobile native set a new career-high against Georgia State, scoring 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field with nine rebounds. He has logged double figures in scoring in 10 straight games, and Dunning ranks seventh in the Sun Belt field goal percentage, shooting 45.6 percent.
  • The Jags are 12-1 when scoring 70 points or more this season and 0-3 when scoring less than 70 points. Additionally, they are 10-4 when limiting their' opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field
  • USA leads the Sun Belt in assists per game, contributing 16.29 per contest. Three players average two or more assists per game -- Myles Corey (6), JJ Wheat (3.1), and Randy Brady (2.9). As a squad, the Jags have tallied 13 games with 15 or more assists this season. 
  •  The Jags average the most three-pointers made per game in the conference, averaging 9.6. Brown and Corey rank inside the top 20 in the conference in threes per game. 
  • South Alabama leads the conference and ranks 18th in the country in steals per game with 9.8. Four Jaguars rank in the top 15 in the SBC in steals per game (John Broom 1.8, JJ Wheat 1.7, Myles Corey 1.6, and Dylan Fasoyiro 1.4).

All-time Series History 

  • Southern Miss leads the all-time series 27-24, but the Jags have won seven out of their last eight games against the Golden Eagles. Head coach Richie Riley also owns a 7-2 record over USM throughout his time with South Alabama.

  • Southern Miss was picked to finish fifth in the league in the Sun Belt Preseason Poll. Andre Curbelo was tabbed a Preseason Third Team All-Sun Belt player.
  • Transfer forward Denijay Harris leads the Sun Belt in rebounds per game (11.0) and ranks second in points per game (16.7). 
  • Jay Ladner is entering his sixth season with Southern Miss and posts a 148-187 record. 
  • The Golden Eagles own a 3-2 record in the Sun Belt Conference, picking up wins over Texas State, ULM, and Marshall.
