ATLANTA – After dropping the doubles point, South Alabama men's tennis appeared to be on its way to a comeback, but ultimately fell short in a 4-2 defeat at Georgia State Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 7-10 overall for the season with a 2-4 record in Sun Belt Conference play.
"This one definitely hurts," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "We felt that our lineup was very strong in singles especially, and maybe that backfired on us. We played doubles like we didn't need it. We had a very slow start in doubles and just didn't compete hard enough. Going into singles, it looked like we were winning on most courts. I don't know if the guys got a little too relaxed or if they expected Georgia State to go away, but those guys are good."
Jack Clements and
Braden Hannig got the Jaguars off to a strong start in doubles with a 6-3 victory, but South came up empty on courts two and three which cost a team point in the match.
In singles play, South Alabama appeared to be putting together a rally after
Javier Montoya and Harold van Raemdonck both earned 6-3, 6-3 victories. The other singles matches the Jags needed went Georgia State's way, though, as the Panthers held on to secure the 4-2 victory.
The Jags will remain in Georgia for a quick turnaround when they face Georgia Southern on Sunday, April 7. First serve will take place as soon as the Georgia Southern women's match ends.
