Jags Down Coastal on Clements’ Senior Day

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama men's tennis sent senior Jack Clements out a winner by defeating Coastal Carolina, 4-2, on Saturday's senior day at Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The No. 74 Jaguars improved to 9-10 overall on the year with the victory, and 4-4 in conference play. It also marked the final regular-season match of the 2024 campaign for the Jags.

"We got a very good win Sunday against Georgia Southern, the top team in the conference, and today it was very important for us not to look past Coastal and put up a fight," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "We stayed tough and got the doubles point, which was huge for our momentum. Singles was the same story. It was a great match and a great battle. I love the fact that we've got some guys who have stepped up heading into the conference tournament."

The Jags got an early jump on CCU with a pair of quick doubles victories. Clements and Braden Hannig teamed up to down their Coastal opponents 6-4 while Rostislav Halfinger and Javier Montoya combined for a 6-3 victory. Juan Accossatto and Harold van Raemdonck were also leading their doubles match, 6-5, before the set went unfinished after the team clinched the doubles point.

Montoya and Accossatto carried their doubles momentum into singles play as both made quick work of their opponents. Montoya finished first on court three with a 6-4, 6-3 win, and Accossatto was right behind with a 7-6, 6-4 victory. The remainder of the day's singles matches went the distance in all three sets.

After a narrow, three-set tiebreak loss on court one, the match hung in the balance with Halfinger and Hannig both in three-set battles. Halfinger quickly dominated the third set over Carlos Berna Ruiz of Coastal, and finished victorious on a score of 7-6, 6-3, 6-1. Hannig also led his match before it went unfinished thanks to a match-clinching victory.

South Alabama will now prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Rome, Ga. Tournament play opens on Thursday, April 18 and runs through Sunday, April 21.
