Jags Secure 4-1 Victory Over Louisiana

MOBILE, Ala. – In a tightly-contest match with several tiebreaks and close games, South Alabama prevailed against Louisiana 4-1 Sunday afternoon.

The win pushed the Jaguars to 7-8 for the season with an even 2-2 mark in conference play.

"Who would have thought we could have performed very poorly yesterday, then come out today and play like a championship team and beat Louisiana," said head coach Nick Brochu. "I'm very proud of the guys. We had a big talk yesterday. Yesterday was very disappointing, and we had to look in the mirror. It's go-time, and not all the guys understood that. Today was completely different, and everybody was zoned in."

Having lost on court three and facing a deficit on court one, South appeared to be out of contention for the doubles point. Jack Clements and Braden Hannig then ripped off several straight games on court one to earn a 6-4 victory and leave it up to court two. On the second court, Rostislav Halfinger and Javier Montoya secured an identical 6-4 victory, and the Jags went up 1-0 in the match.

Halfinger and Hannig carried their doubles momentum into singles play and earned USA's two most dominant victories of the day. Halfinger made quick work of Sacha Grandvincent in 6-0, 6-1 fashion while Hannig downed Dimitrov Vasil 6-2, 6-2 to put the Jags up 3-0. It appeared the Jags would cruise to a victory at that point, but Louisiana came fighting back on every other court.

On court three, Montya dropped set one but fought back to win set two in tiebreak fashion with a 7-4 score. Harold van Raemdonck earned a 6-4 victory in his first set, but dropped set two in a tiebreak. That left Juan Accossatto who won his opening set 6-3, but had to fight his way back to force a tiebreak in set two. After falling behind 4-1 to start the tiebreak, Accossatto rallied and came away victorious on a 10-8 tiebreak score, winning his match 6-3, 7-6 (10-8). That win secured the team victory for the Jags, 4-1.

After two-straight matches at home, South will now hit the road for matches at Georgia State and Georgia Southern on April 6th and 7th, respectively.
