South Alabama Closes Road Slate at Southern Miss and Arkansas State

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team is set for one final regular season road trip, starting at Southern Mississippi on Thursday, Feb.22 at 7 p.m. before taking on Arkansas State on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2:30 p.m

Last Time Out

South Alabama had its three-game home winning streak snapped, falling 76-73 to Arkansas State Saturday evening in the Mitchell Center. Samuel Tabe had a monstrous outing, setting a new season-high of 35 points on 15-24 shooting from the field with six rebounds. The Jags outshot the Red Wolves from the field (50%) and three-point range (33.3%) but struggled on the boards, losing the rebounding battle 42-31 and allowing 21 second-chance points. 

Notes

  • Tabe's 35 points against Arkansas State is the most points scored by a Jaguar in Head Coach Richie Riley's six seasons. He also set a new career-high in field goals made (15) and attempted (24). 
  • The Jags have been incredibly efficient from the free-throw line this year, ranking second in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage, shooting 75.0 percent from the charity stripe. Through 27 games, this is the third-highest free-throw percentage in program history. South also set a new season-high in free throws with 31 against Georgia Southern. 
  • South Alabama is 3-1 since Marcus Millender and Julian Margrave have been back in the starting lineup. Millender has logged 24 assists and averaged 10.7 points and four rebounds in the last four games. Margrave has averaged nine points on 12-of-22 shooting from behind the arc, four rebounds, and in the same stretch. 
  • Isiah Gaiter ranks Top-10 in the Sun Belt in multiple statistical categories. He ranks fourth in free throw percentage (82.9) and fifth in field goal percentage (46.6). 
  • South Alabama ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in turnover margin. The Jags post a 1.04 ratio and had an extremely efficient night against NIU, dishing out 17 assists and only committing seven turnovers.
  • The Jags made a season-high 13 three-pointers against Northern Illinois. South shot 48.1 percent from behind the arc compared to 45.2 percent from the field. Tyrell Jones led with five triples, Julian Margrave made four threes, and Marcus MillenderElijah OrmistonJudah Brown, and Isiah Gaiter added one three-pointer.
  • South Alabama won three straight games at home for the first time since early December, averaging a margin of victory of 13 points. (W 78-65 Georgia Southern, W 75-66 NIU, W 72-55 Texas State). 

Southern Miss (15-12, 8-6)

  • Southern Miss has won three of its last four games, beating Old Dominion, Western Michigan, and Texas State. 
  • The Golden Eagles are fifth in the Sun Belt in scoring defense, holding its opponents to 70.1 points per game. They are also second in the conference in blocks, averaging 4.81 per contest. 
  • Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year Austin Crowley is fourth in the conference in points per game (16.3). 
  • Illinois transfer Andre Curbelo has been a difference-maker this year, averaging 13.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per contest.

  • South Alabama trails in the all-time series 22-27.

  • After defeating the Jags on Saturday, Arkansas State has won three straight games in a row, defeating Troy and Ohio. 
  • The Red Wolves are third in the conference in scoring offense, averaging 79.6 points per game. They shoot 35.4 percent from three-point range, which ranks second in the Sun Belt. 
  • Taryn Todd has been electric for the Red Wolves as of late. Todd has averaged 17.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in the last five games. 
  • Caleb Fields leads the Sun Belt in assists per game, averaging 5.7. Fields has totaled five ten assists games this season.
