MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama trickled in runs all night for a convincing 6-run advantage while leaving the Lamar offense cold.
South struck early with a two-run home run in the second inning from
Brennan Holt.
Joseph Sullivan then knocked another run in off a single that sent
Duncan Mathews home. Petracci added two more with a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning. The Jags turned up the heat in the sixth, as
Tyler Borges made way for the top of the lineup to load the bases and took advantage of a wild pitch to get runner
Rett Johnson the sixth run.
JG Bell singled in the eighth to send home the seventh run for good measure.
On the mound,
Carson Swilling's Jaguar debut went a full 5.0 innings for the win. He struck out seven batters allowing only five on base and not letting up any earned runs.
Matthew DeLano,
Zach Willingham, and
John Gillis combined to only allow four more batters to reach base.Â
Winning Pitcher: Carson Swilling (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Brooks Caple (0-1)
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi:
On
Carson Swilling's debut: I thought he was really good. He was amped up. Seven strikeouts, two walks, three hits, no runs. And he wanted to go back out for more, you know, and that's what you want out of a guy. Sometimes you gotta keep them from themselves and that's when he would have gone out there and pitched and he wanted to throw a complete game but obviously that was in the cards tonight, but I'm super super pleased with Swilling's performance against a very solid club. They're hard to strike out, they don't strike out a whole lot, man. They have a good two strike approach and he just overpowered some of the bats.Â
On Gillis' return from injury: Gillis has worked extremely hard to put himself in position to go out there tonight. Having to sit out all year last year and he had the fullTommy John's, so it's not the six-eight month deal. He's been chomping at the bit to get back going. It is great to see him back out there and healthy.
