South Drops Tough Road Contest to Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C.- South Alabama dropped a tough match on the road to Charleston Southern in a 60-55 final.

The Jags started out well with a 12-4 run to open the gates. Amyria Walker and Rachel Leggett helped fuel the run, scoring eight of South's 12 points during the run. The Buccaneers stormed back as the quarter ended, with South holding on to a 16-14 lead.

South Alabama's offense really sparked in the opening minutes of the second, going on another 12-4 run led by back-to-back threes from Terren Coffil and Michiyah Simmons. Simmons stayed hot scoring six straight points to help elevate the Jags to a 34-29 lead at the half.

Both teams got off to slow starts with neither team being able to buy a bucket for the first three minutes. Baskets from Simmons and Princess Okafor Nweze helped push the Jaguar lead to seven to break open the drought. The Buccaneers crawled back in and cut the deficit to two as the third quarter transpired.

The Jags struggled to convert in the fourth as Charleston Southern went on a deep run to push their lead to as much as eight. South made one last push, but would fall short in a 60-55 final.
