Jaguars Drop to Rattlers in Five Sets

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - South Alabama (6-1) loses in five sets against Florida A&M (2-5) in their first match of the FAMU Tournament.

The Jaguars played tough in the first set, with two kills and a block by Hannah Maddux, and three kills from Maddie Soboleski, but the Rattlers ended the set hitting 17% better to lift them to a 25-20 set 1 win.

Game two stayed close, as neither side could string together a sizable run to decide the set. Two different South players produced four kills in this set, Abryanna Cannon, and Soboleski, while Niki Capizzi landed three kills of her own. The three of them accounted for 11 of the 15 kills in the set. USA took set 2, 25-23.

The Jags gained early separation in the third set, with an 11-2 run that was capped by back-to-back kills from Capizzi. In the middle of the set, the teams traded points until the Jags cruised to the target 25 on a 5-1 stretch, featuring twin kills from Maddux, and a service ace from Capizzi. USA defense stayed strong only allowing nine kills and 12 total points.

The fourth frame saw stretches where any time South put together some offense, FAMU had a twofold response of their own. The Jags' effort was valiant, including five kills from Soboleski, but the Rattlers forced a five set match with a 25-19 fourth.

Set five saw another three kills from Cannon, but South couldn't rally late. Florida A&M won the final set, 15-10.

Overall, Maddux and Capizzi totaled 15 kills each, and Cannon finished with 12 of her own. Paige Lynn ended with 17 digs, followed up by Maddux with 16. Kailey Keeble added another 49 assists to put her at 300 total assists on the season. Maddux also earned two solo blocks, while Cannon and Lillie Simons combined for two total blocks each.
