TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - South Alabama (6-2) loses to No. 11 Georgia Tech in the second leg of the FAMU Tournament 3-0.
South started slow, only managing two total kills in the first set, from Maddie Soboleski and Lillie Simons, and tracked 10 attacking errors. The Yellow Jackets took set 1, 25-15.
Set two was highlighted by a 4-2 run that saw three of the four USA points as kills from Hannah Maddux. Maddux finished with four kills on the set, and Soboleski ended with five. South worked late in the set for a comeback but ultimately dropped the set, 25-18.
The third frame began strong for the Jags, as a 4-0 run early put the score 10-6 by way of kills from Niki Capizzi, Soboleski, and a pair from Maddux. Georgia Tech wasn't deterred, as the set stayed competitive with Tech creating separation into the final points. The Jags surged late, though, tying the match at 23 apiece with a 6-2 run. The Yellow Jackets ended the game in three sets with back-to-back kills.
Soboleski led the team with 10 kills on the day. Kailey Keeble had 25 assists, and Capizzi put up an impressive five solo blocks. Paige Lynn ended with the most digs, 14, and one of three service aces. The other two were scored by Maddux and Anna Loberg.
NOTES
- This is the seventh match this season that the Jags have held the opponent under .200 hitting percentage.
- This is the fifth game that South totaled more blocks than opponents.
- USA has had fewer attacking errors in seven of their eight matches this season.
