NOTES & QUOTES
  • The Jaguars contest against the Lions on Saturday will mark the team's 2023 home opener. Since its completion in2020, South Alabama owns a record of 11-7 in games played in Hancock Whitney Stadium. Entering last year, USA was just .500 inside "The Whit", but ripped off a 5-1 home record in 2022 to put together a true home-field advantage.
  • The South Alabama defense forced Tulane into three turnovers in the season opener by recovering three fumbles. It was USA's most forced turnovers since taking the ball away four times at Louisiana a season ago.
  • With a made field goal and two extra points against Tulane, kicker Diego Guajardo set a new South Alabama program record for career points scored.
  • Quarterback Carter Bradley finds himself in the top-100 of 10 different statistical categories in the NCAA after just one game this season. Bradley's highest mark is being 20th in completion percentage with a clip of .767
"Ball security. You can get away sometimes with maybe eyes in the wrong place, but you're not going to win many ball games turning the ball over four times. So that's the one thing that has to change."

-Offensive Coordinator Major Applewhite on the one thing he would like to see the offense improve on in week two

"After the game, really after those plays on the sidelines, is when you starting talking about those things. Where were your eyes? What were you seeing? Then trying to make those corrections. Obviously, you get a chance after the game to talk through some of those things and feel those things. And then when you get a chance to actually sit down and watch it happen for the fourth and fifth time, it's crystal clear how simple some of those self-inflicted wounds were."

-Defensive Coordinator Corey Batoon on the defense's mindset on fixing mistakes from the Tulane game

"Angry. Embarrassed at how simple the mistakes were. It's one thing when you have a scheme error and you realize somebody had something on you and they used it to take advantage. We worked really hard on some of the things we exposed ourselves on against Western Kentucky, and Tulane actually tried two of those concepts. One of them we knocked out really well, the other one was just a simple execution error on the other side. It wasn't anything fancy, we just didn't play our position."

-Head Coach Kane Wommack on his feelings after watching the film from Saturday's game at Tulane

LAST TIME OUT

Turnovers and penalties plagued South Alabama all throughout the season opener as the Jaguars fell to Tulane 37-17 at Yulman Stadium.

The Jaguars lost three fumbles on the night and threw two additional interceptions. South's defense did a good job of getting the offense the ball back, though, as it hopped on three fumbles of its own. Jamie Sheriff, Khalil Jacobs and Yam Banks all forced fumbles while James Miller, Ricky Fletcher and Ke'Shun Brown came up with the recoveries. Miller and Sheriff also led the tackling efforts on the night with seven apiece.

Offensively, quarterback Carter Bradley threw the ball 30 times, completing 23 of those passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. Bradley also produced South Alabama's other touchdown on the night with his legs as he scrambled from four yards out for the first score of 2023.

Bradley's top targets on the night were Jamaal Pritchett and Caullin Lacy. Pritchett hauled in five receptions for 63 yards while Lacy caught seven balls for 60 yards. Devin Voisin was on the other end of the lone passing touchdown of the night as he and Bradley connected for a seven-yard touchdown on South's first drive of the third quarter.

After falling behind 24-7 in the first half, the Jags kicked a field goal to make the score 24-10 heading into the locker room. Tulane received the ball to start the second half, but Banks laid a big hit on a Tulane rusher to get South Alabama the ball back. That turnover led to Voisin's touchdown a few plays later, but it would prove to be the final points of the night for USA as Tulane ran away with the ball game.
