CLEMSON, S.C. - South Alabama (6-0) ends the weekend 3-0 with a sweep of Western Carolina (1-5).
A pair of early aces from Paige Lynn kept the Jaguars competitive as both teams had their way offensively. Abryanna Cannon and Hannah Maddux worked in tandem as the speartip of the offense in set 1. The Jaguars were favored by a string of errors by the Catamounts that led to a 5-1 run and a set 1 win.
Set 2 started off slow, as USA looked at an 8-3 deficit, but the Jags stayed focused and worked back into the set, topped off with an Anna Loberg ace to bring it even at 11 apiece. Maddie Soboleski took control of the back half of the set, putting down four kills, which ended up being the difference. South took set 2, 25-21.
The final set mirrored the first, with neither side gaining a clear advantage early. South worked WCU into another run of errors that proved to be too much to overcome. Blocks were scarce in this match for both squads with there only being 10 total, but a Kailey Keeble-Niki Capizzi block was the tentpole of a 5-0 run for the Jaguars that solidified the sweep on a set 3, 25-20 win.
Maddux was the offensive leader of the day, hitting .433 with 15 kills and two digs. Soboleski and Cannon also put double-digit kills on the board, 12 and 11, respectively. Cannon also contributed to three of the team's four blocks. Paige Lynn finished the day with 14 digs and three aces, tying her career high. Loberg was effective off the bench today, with seven digs, an assist, and an ace. Keeble's final stat line included 39 assists, eight digs, and a block.
