South Alabama Defeats Clemson in Sweep

CLEMSON, S.C. - South Alabama (5-0) defeats Clemson (2-2) in three sets in the second leg of the Clemson Invitational.

Set 1 was dominated by the Jaguars, with Hannah Maddux shining in the spotlight with seven kills. Capizzi also started early with four kills, and the set ended with three team kills for the Jags. USA ended the set on a blazing 13-5 run to solidify the score at 25-15.

Jags created some early separation in the set with a 10-0 run that stunned the Tigers at 13-3. Clemson clawed its way back within two, at 21-19, but it was too late, as Maddux finished the set with a pair of kills along with a kill from Abryanna Cannon and a block by Cannon and Lillie Simons. The Jaguars took set 2, 25-20. 

Clemson refused to back down in set 3. The Tigers worked out of a 5 point deficit to challenge the Jaguars late in the set. Niki Capizzi stood out in this one, with six kills, two blocks, and an ace. Simons also put work in, with two blocks in the last set and the game-winning kill.

Hannah Maddux led the team with 18 kills on her .302 hitting percentage, also earning four digs and an assist. Capizzi finished with 12 kills hitting .348, five blocks, two aces, and two digs. Maddie Soboleski was one kill shy of her third double-double of the season, tallying 13 digs, nine kills, three assists, and an ace. Lots of players added to the 10 total team blocks today, notably Kailey Keeble (4), Cannon (3), and Simons (4). Keeble earned another 37 assists and eight blocks in the three-set day. Paige Lynn tied Soboleski in team-leading digs with 13.

NOTABLES
- This is South's second sweep of the season.
- USA finished with 18 errors, the third sub-20 performance of the season.
- South has reached double-digits in blocks in four of their five games in 2023.

South plays Western Carolina on September 3, at 10:30 a.m. to finish off their play in the Clemson Invitational.
