TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Led by 12 points from
Kelsey Thompson, South Alabama sported five players in double figures as the Jaguars knocked off Florida A&M, 68-65, Friday night at the Al Lawson Center.
The victory advanced the Jags to 6-3 for the season with wins in three of their last four contests.
In addition to Thompson's 12 points,
Zena Elias,
Nadia Howard and
Michiyah Simmons all scored 11 points apiece.
Kiana Anderson was the fifth in double-digits with 10, and
Jordan Rosier just missed out on joining her teammates with nine points of her own.
The Jags turned in a dominant performance on the glass, outrebounding the Rattlers 38-26 for the game. Fourteen of those boards came on the offensive side of the court, earning South a 9-0 advantage in second-chance points. USA's aggressiveness also paid off as it earned 26 trips to the free-throw line as opposed to just nine total attempts for Florida A&M.
GAME FACTS
- The Jags were outscored in both the first and fourth quarters and the two teams were even in the second quarter at 16 points apiece. It was South's 20-13 advantage in the third quarter that gave it enough separation for the victory.
- South Alabama went on a 14-2 run early in the third quarter to take a 12-point lead. That lead proved to be the largest of the game for either team.
- Rosier knocked down three, 3-pointers through the course of the game. The Jags hit 8-of-14 from distance on the night as a team.
- Florida A&M led for the majority of the first half, but the Jaguar defense never let the Rattlers go up by more than three points.
- The Jaguars' rebounding kept them in the game as the Rattlers made 46.3 percent of their shots while South hit 41.5 percent of its field goal attempts.
NOTES
- Friday marked South's second trip to Tallahassee this season. The Jags lost a November visit to Florida State before knocking off Florida A&M.
- Entering Friday's matchup, the Jags had five players averaging double-figure scoring. Five Jaguars finished the game in double-digits.
- USA now leads the all-time series against the Rattlers by a tally of 9-3.
- South Alabama's 38 rebounds were a new team high this season. Anderson led the way for the Jags with eight.
- The Jaguars have now responded to each of their last-two losses with a victory.
