Jaguars set to Host Crosstown Opponent Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team (5-5) will return to the Mitchell Center to face off against cross-town rival Spring Hill College on Saturday, Dec.8 at 3 p.m. CT.

South Alabama dominated the Mercer Bears Tuesday afternoon from start to finish as five Jaguars finished in double figures to secure its largest victory of the season and head coach Richie Riley's 99th win at South Alabama, 83-62. 

The Series 

This is the 27th matchup between South Alabama and Spring Hill. The Jaguars lead the all-time series 23-3 and have won the last 18 matchups.

About Spring Hill (5-4)

  • The Badgers are third place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They've won three of their last five games against Clark Atlanta, Fort Valley State, and Auburn Montgomery. 
  • Spring Hill has been red-hot offensively this season, with five different players averaging double digits per contest. Walter Peggs Jr. averages 21.3 points, Steven Lyles scores 11.1, Bo Barber averages 10.7 points, Timothy Reilly averages 10.6, and Isaiah Veal scores 10.1. 
  • Peggs Jr. is coming off a season-high 36-point performance against Clark Atlanta. 
  • Craig Kennedy leads the Badgers in his sixth season as head coach with a 41-87 career record.

  • Spring Hill has been impressive from behind the arc, averaging nine three-pointers per contest.

  • Isiah Gaiter (15.2) and Maxwell Land (10.2) average double digits per game in scoring. Marcus Millender, Tyrell Jones, and Julian Margrave all average nine points per contest. 
  • The Jaguars closed a three-game road trip Wednesday with a dismantling 83-62 win over Mercer. Five Jaguars finished with double-digits in scoring.  Isiah Gaiter led the way with 17 points, Samuel Tabe set a new season-high of 15 points, Tyrell Jones had 14 points, Elijah Ormiston also set a new season-high of 12 points, and Marcus Millender finished with 10 points. 
  • Gaiter has been a difference-maker for the Jaguars, recording eight double-figure scoring games this season. He is ranked fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in field goal percentage (50.5) and third in free throw percentage (85.0). The Jags are 5-3 this season when he scores 10 points or more in a contest. 
  • Marcus Millender leads the Sun Belt Conference in total assists with 39 this year. South Alabama is 4-1 this season when Millender has four assists or more in a game. 
  • As a team, the Jaguars have been efficient at taking care of the basketball in the past two games, totaling 11 combined turnovers against Mercer and Jacksonville State. 
  • The Jags are ranked third in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage, shooting 73.4 percent from the charity stripe. Against Maryland, South shot 100 percent from the free throw line for the first time since January of 2022. 
  •  South Alabama is 3-2 at home and 1-3 on the road this season. 
  • Thomas Howell is the Jaguar's leading rebounder, averaging 5.2 rebounds per contest. 
  • South Alabama has totaled two double-doubles so far this season. Marcus Millender logged 23 points and ten assists against Nicholls, finishing one rebound shy of a triple-double, grabbing nine rebounds. Howell secured his first double-double in a Jaguar uniform and the sixth in his career against Denver, scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds.
