South Alabama returns home to host Jaguar Classic

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team (1-2) will host three opponents this week in the Jaguar Classic presented by Holiday Inn Express & Suites from Thursday, Nov.16 through Sunday, Nov.19. All games will take place in the Mitchell Center. 

The Jaguars will open the MTE (Multiple-Team Event) against Nicholls State University on Thursday, Nov.16 at 7 p.m. CT. This matchup will be the first between the Jaguars and the Colonels since head coach Richie Riley left Nicholls to become South Alabama's head coach in 2018. South Alabama leads the series 4-0 all-time over Nicholls, with the last meeting coming in December of 1996

South Alabama will follow that with a matchup versus the University of Denver on Friday, Nov.17 at 3 p.m. CT. The Jaguars have a long history of playing against the Pioneers. The two teams have met 26 times since 1972, and Denver leads the series 14-12. 

The Jags will wrap up the MTE on Sunday, Nov.19, when they take on Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. South Alabama has faced  SIUE three times in program history. The Jaguars have a 2-1 advantage over the Cougars in the series.

About Nicholls State 

Nicholls is entering its first year under the helm of head coach Tevon Saddler. The Colonels sport a 1-1 record this season with a 91-81 season-opening loss to Tulane and a dramatic 68-66 victory over SEC opponent LSU.  Jamal West Jr averages 19.0 points, five rebounds, and four assists per contest for the Colonels.

About Denver

. The Pioneers started their season with a 95-87 loss to UC San Diego before defeating Cal Poly 97-76 in game two. Denver has four players averaging double-digits and two players scoring 20 points per contest. Tommy Bruner has been a force for the Pioneers, averaging 25.5 points per game, while Touko Tainamo has logged 22 points per contest.

About SIUE

SIUE opened up its season with a dominant victory over North Park 92-67 and a loss 68-50 loss to Missouri. Shamar Wright and Damarco Minor have led the Cougars this season. Wright scored a career-high 29 points in the Cougars season opener, while Minor has averaged a double-double in the first two contests this year.
