Three second half goals lift South Alabama over App State

MOBILE, Ala. – The Jaguars fell behind 1-0 going into halftime, but responded with three unanswered goals in the second half to secure the 3-1 win over App State at The Cage on Thursday night.

South Alabama (10-0-3, 3-0-2) and App State (5-4-3, 2-1-2) battled back-and-forth for the first 40 minutes of action, but neither team could capitalize on their opportunities until App State broke through in the 43th minute of play off a goal from Summer Bowman, her third of the season.

Despite having eight shots in the first half, the Jaguars were unable to find the back of the net and trailed at the half for the first time this season.

South Alabama applied pressure on the App State defense coming out of halftime, scoring three second half goals to give South its 10th win of the season.

The Jags found the equalizer in the 67th minute off a goal from Gabby Hollar, her eighth of the season, off an assist from Chiara Singarella.

Singarella joined the scoring in the 77th minute, ripping a left footed goal into the bottom right corner of the goal to give South Alabama the 2-1 lead. Singarella capped off the night with another goal in the 85th minute, her seventh of the season.

South Alabama totaled 18 total shots on the night, while holding App State to just five.

The South Alabama attack was led by Singarella, who totaled four shots, and played a hand in all three goals in the match.

SCORING SUMMARY
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Richard Moodie:
"It's fair to say we are happy with the result but unhappy with the performance. I think for conference games the last few weeks, Southern Miss and ULM, I wish we had that nitty-grittiness about us. The last 10 minutes of ULM were good and we wanted to start the way we finished and we didn't, but the girls are relentless. We worked hard and got bodies off the bench to come in and do the jobs we needed. That's what a conference win should look like. Just nitty-gritty. We've got to go back to the drawing board and see if we can't control the game a little more. Great performance from Kate Nicolson, she played some big minutes tonight. Of course Chiara Singarella scoring the goals she did, we've got a great squad with great depth."

Forward Chiara Singarella:
"I think as a team; the first half wasn't as pretty but then at halftime we went to the locker room and Coach Moodie set up a new plan and we saw results. My goals and my assist would not have been possible without my teammates, so I am really grateful to be on this team and I think we needed this win. Super important three points."
