LAFAYETTE, La. - South Alabama (17-3, 8-0) wins 3-1 at Long Gym against Louisiana (12-10, 3-5) to stay undefeated in conference play behind a 20 kill performance by
Hannah Maddux.
Louisiana came out hot with a quick 5-0 lead that put South in rally mode early. An early 6-0 Jaguar run tied it back at eight to keep things together. Service aces from
Anna Loberg and
Kailey Keeble gave the Jags the edge and a pair of
Abryanna Cannon kills late gave South Alabama the first set, 25-21.
In the second frame neither squad gained a significant lead until a four point USA run sent the match to media timeout 15-12. Cannon then worked out a point in a defiant solo block before repeating with a block assist alongside
Niki Capizzi. Keeble then made some noise with a sneaky kill followed up with a block with Capizzi. Another Loberg ace gave USA a 22-17 lead. UL put together a run of their own to tie the match at 24, but an untimely error and a Maddux kill gave the Jags a 27-25 set win.
Set three began as a back and forth affair, but a quick three points for the Ragin' Cajuns gave a narrow platform that they used for the rest of the set to build upon, scoring two points for every one by South. The Jags climbed back in late with aces from Maddux and Loberg, but Louisiana ended it before South could complete the comeback, 25-21.
Set four was Jaguar controlled from start to finish. Early aces from Soboleski and Capizzi alongside six clustered Maddux kills had the Jags coasting on a 16-6 lead. Maddux sent over another ace which signaled the white flag for the Ragin' Cajuns as a multitude of errors ended the match with a 25-10 set.
Along with Maddux's 20 kills, she finished with two solo blocks, and two aces on the day, with Soboleski close behind at 17 kills, nine digs, one ace, and one solo block. Both Cannon and Capizzi tallied one solo block and four assists today, and Keeble and
Lillie Simons totaled three on the day. Keeble also finished with 48 assists, 11 digs, and a kill.
Paige Lynn and
Briana Wilson led defensively, totaling 15 and 11 digs apiece.
