LAFAYETTE, La. - South Alabama (16-3, 7-0) extends their win streak to nine as the Jaguars take the first game of the series at Louisiana (12-9, 3-4), 3-2.
The Jaguars were fueled early by kills from
Abryanna Cannon,
Niki Capizzi, and a service ace from
Anna Loberg.
Maddie Soboleski dropped in a few kills late into the set along with
Hannah Maddux, with Soboleski, Capizzi, and Cannon all earning five kills in the first set alone along a Jaguar-dominant 25-21 set win.
Louisiana parlayed an early 12-2 run into a towering 17-10. Capizzi stepped up with several successful attacks as the Jags went on an 11-1 run of their own with some help from several Ragin' Cajun errors to comeback on a 23-20 lead. Maddux scored the 24th point, and a service error marked the winning point for South.
Set three began similarly to the second, with Louisiana breaking off midway on an 8-2 run to take the lead 17-13. The Jags were unable to produce a run in response as the Ragin' Cajuns won 25-19.
Offense again showed off for South as Maddux raked for another five kills while Cannon and Soboleski scored another three each. While USA scored 11 kills in the set, UL totaled 17 as a late offensive surge and a pair of service aces lifted Louisiana to a 25-21 set, forcing the game to a tie-breaker set.
In South's third set five of the season, the Jaguars punched first with the first the points, the third being a Maddux ace. The Jags were threatened several times, but when they needed the separation, Maddux struck three kills and another ace to set up the final run, which included a resounding Capizzi putback kill for the match point, 15-9.
Four players finished with double-digit kills, Maddux (19), Capizzi (14), Cannon (13), and Soboleski (13). Soboleski led the team with four blocks, followed by
