Jaguar soccer travels to Jacksonville State on Sunday

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama continues opening weekend with a matchup in Jacksonville, Ala., against in-state foe Jacksonville State on Sunday. Kickoff is set for noon and the game will be shown on ESPN+.
 
South Alabama currently leads the series 5-3-2 and won the last matchup between the teams, 3-1 (Sep. 3, 2017). The Jags and Gamecocks will be meeting in Jacksonville for the first time since 2008.
 
South Alabama (1-0-0) kicked off its season against Kennesaw State Thursday night and came away with a 2-1 victory. After falling behind 1-0, the Jag offense quickly answered to tie the game. Monique Gray then scored her first goal of the season to give South the 2-1 lead.
 
Jacksonville State (0-1-0) dropped their season opener to in-state opponent Samford, 2-0.
 
The Jags will kick off their home schedule Thursday, Aug. 25, against North Alabama at 7 p.m. All home games will be played at The Cage.

  • Sunday's matchup will be the first meeting between the two teams in Jacksonville since 2008.
  • The Jags have won five of the last six matchups against Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks have not won a game against the Jags since 2008.
  • Jacksonville State ended the 2021 season 7-10-2 overall and 3-5-1 in their conference (ASUN). The Gamecocks earned a spot in the 2021 ASUN Soccer Championship.
  • Jax State returns 15 players from last year's roster, while adding 13. Key returners include Kylie Wells, Cynthia Bagozzi and Gabriel Clarke.
  • Jacksonville State was picked to finish 11th in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Jaguars are 190-150-23 in nonconference play throughout program history.
  • South Alabama (12-5-3 last season) was picked to win the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference earlier this week with three players earning All-Conference honors.
  • Senior midfielder Gracie Wilson was picked as the Preseason Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year after earning the honor in 2021.
  • Fifth-year defender Gabrielle Gayle was named as the Preseason Sun Belt Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after helping to secure eight shutouts last season.
  • Fifth-year Morgan Cross was named Preseason All-Sun Belt after scoring six goals and adding six assists last season.
