NEW ORLEANS – Tulane scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and added a four runs in the eighth to defeat the University of South Alabama baseball team 11-7 Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane (30-19-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, and held a 7-1 lead through five innings before South Alabama (27-20) scored six runs in the top of the sixth, aided by a Miles Simington grand slam, to tie the score 7-7. But the Green Wave plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.
UP NEXT
South Alabama will return to action Friday when it hosts ULM at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field to open a three-game Sun Belt Conference series.
GAME FACTS
- Tulane jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single through the right side of the infield by Brady Marget. An RBI infield single to third by Jackson Linn doubled the Green Wave lead at 2-0. A one-out, two-run double off the left field wall by Simon Baumgardt pushed the Tulane lead to 4-0.
- Hunter Stokes singled through the left side of the infield with one out in the top of the fourth, and later scored on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Carter Sanford to cut the Tulane lead to 4-1.
- Baumgardt doubled to left field with one out in the bottom of the fifth, and eventually scored on a throwing error by Santi Montiel on a grounder to shortstop off the bat of Jared Hart for a 5-1 Green Wave advantage. A two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield by Gavin Schulz for a 6-1 lead. Bennett Lee then delivered an RBI double up the middle of the infield for a 7-1 advantage.
- Montiel singled to center field with one out in the top of the sixth, and Joseph Sullivan followed with a walk. Sanford then delivered an RBI single through the left side of the infield to plate Montiel and cut the Tulane lead to 7-2. Cameron Tissue drew a walk to load the bases with one out before Will Turner reached on an RBI walk with two outs to cut the Green Wave lead to 7-3. Miles Simington then delivered a grand slam over the right field wall on a 1-1 pitch to tie the score 7-7.
- Tulane took an 8-7 lead in the  bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly to center field by Teo Banks. An RBI single off the left field wall by Trevor Minder gave the Green Wave a 9-7 advantage. Brady Hebert delivered a two-out, two-run single up the middle later in the inning for the game's final runs.
NOTES
- Turner extended his on-base streak to 34 games with a one-out infield single to second in the top of the third.
- Orbeta's on-base streak was snapped at 29 games, and had his hitting streak ended at 12 games.
- Stokes extended his on-base streak to 16 games with a one-out single through the left side of the infield in the top of the fourth.Â
- Sanford went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored to lead the Jags at the plate. Turner finished 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored, Stokes went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored and Simington added a grand slam, four RBIs and one run scored.
- Jaguar right-hander John Gillis tossed 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings, and allowed three hits with one walk.

"We fought like crazy to tie it back up. Give our guys a lot of credit, they hung in there – no quit. We weren't good enough in all three phases tonight. We had a fielding blunder in there which hurt us that would have closed out the inning. Bottom line is we need to be better. Our pitching and defense wasn't good enough tonight when we needed it to be. Our offense was, but our pitching and defense was not good enough and that was the story of the game. It was a competitive game and I knew it would be, we just needed to be better on the mound and defensively and we weren't tonight and lost a tough one+
