Jag Football returns to action with Homecoming contest on Saturday

The game is the first of two in five days for South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. | Following a week off, South Alabama football hits the field at Hancock Whitney Stadium for the first of two games in five days on Saturday night facing ULM for Homecoming 2022.

The game is set to kick at 6:00 pm on the NFL Network.

South Alabama (4-1, 1-0 Sun Belt) returns to action after knocking off Louisiana back on October 1 on the road, 20-17 on a 43-yard field goal as time expired by Diego Guajardo. This weekend's game marks the first of two games at home for the Jags on national television as they will face rival Troy in the "Battle for the Belt" on Thursday night on ESPNU.

The Jags enter the game with one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, averaging 35.0 points per game (32nd in the nation), 273.4 yards passing (34th in the nation), and 432.2 yards of total offense (51st in the nation). They are also one of the best teams in the nation defensively ranking 19th in the nation in total defense (302.4 yards per game), 28th in scoring defense (18.8 points per game), 14th in passing efficiency defense (109.92), and sixth in turnover margin (1.40).

The two teams have met eight times in school history with ULM (2-4, 1-2, Sun Belt) leading 5-3 including winning last year's game 41-31 in Monroe behind Chandler Rogers 400-plus yard performance of total offense. The two have split each meeting except for back-to-back wins by the Warhawks in 2018-19.

GAME NOTES
  • Guajardo continues to lead the nation in kicking as he remains perfect in field goals after his two against Louisiana, including the game-winner.
  • Saturday's game marks the fourth against a team from the state of Louisiana for the Jags after having played Nicholls, Louisiana Tech, and Louisiana.
  • Carter Bradley ranks among the nation's best in 11 categories through the first five games this season, including 25th in points responsible for.
  • La'Damian Webb ranks among the nation's best in eight categories, including 24th in rushing touchdowns and 36th in all-purpose yards. Meanwhile, Caullin Lacy (six) and Jalen Wayne (four) are also among the nation's best.
  • Yam Banks will wear the #5 jersey this week and will be the third defensive back to wear it this season following Keith Gallmon, Jr. and Darrell Luter, Jr. who each represented the number through the first two games.
  • The Jags are tied for sixth in the nation in turnover margin and are currently tied for ninth in turnovers gained.
