Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

JAGUAR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS IN OVERTIME AT GSU

ATLANTA – With one second left on the clock, graduate student Jaylin Powell sunk a game-tying three from the left side of the arc, sending the University of South Alabama women's basketball team into overtime with Georgia State. Despite their efforts in the extra five minutes the Jags fell to the Panthers 72-66 in the GSU Sports Arena on Thursday.

Powell registered double figures for the third time in conference play with 17 points in the contest. Nadia Howard and Kiana Anderson also had double digits for the game with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Mahogany Vaught paced the Jags in multiple categories with 11 rebounds and four assists.

Ashley Foster led all players in scoring with 18 points followed by Hannah Sadler with 12 points for the Panthers. Georgia State doubled South's total in blocks with two players, Deasia Merrill and Taniyah Worth, recording three each.

GAME FACTS
- The teams traded buckets for the first three minutes of the contest, tying up the score twice, before Powell's jumper pushed the Jags ahead 6-4.
- For the remainder of the period South held the advantage, finishing the quarter with a 12-10 lead, with Howard responsible for eight of the team's points.
- Georgia State's five unanswered points to start the second pushed them ahead, 17-12, a lead they maintained for the remainder of the game.
- South battled back, reducing its deficit to two at 21-19 with Destiny Samuel's three pointer halfway through the second period, however, GSU finished the half with a 31-23 advantage.
- The Panthers continued their scoring from the second quarter in the start of the third with a 9-0 run that pushed their lead to 35-23.
- The South Alabama offense was unable to score a field goal until the final two minutes of the third period, in which the team spent registering three layups and a jumper to go into the fourth trailing by just four by a score of 44-40.
- South's largest run of the night came in the second half of the fourth quarter with seven straight points that featured a Powell three pointer.
- Powell continued to shoot from beyond the arc with her next trey coming in the final second of regulation to tie the game.
- The Jags were unable to overcome the Panthers in the extra five minutes, scoring just 11 points compared to Georgia State's 17.

NOTES
- Georgia State extended its win streak over South Alabama to three. The contest also marked the Panthers' third straight win over the Jags in Atlanta.
- It marked South's first overtime game since a 78-76 win over Texas State on Jan. 25, 2020, and the first overtime loss since a 57-56 defeat to Appalachian State on Feb. 5, 2018.
- With 45 rebounds, South Alabama exceeded its previous season high of 40, which came against Faulkner on Dec. 14.
- From USA's 21 turnovers, a figure that ties its season high set at Georgia on Dec. 21, Georgia State was able to score 22 of its points.
- The Panthers also registered 48 points in the paint, the second-highest total by a Jaguar opponent this season.
- Georgia State's bench also outscored South's by nearly double, recording 31 points compared to the Jags' 17.
- Powell's buzzer-beater marks the second time she rallied for the Jags with less than five seconds in the game. The first time she played in the GSU Sports Arena, Dec. 18, she hit the game winning free throw against Charleston Southern with four seconds remaining.
- Vaught's 11 rebounds were the most of her career. It was also the first time the junior recorded double figures in the category.
- Howard posted double figures in scoring (16) for the second straight game.
- Responsible for all three of South's blocked shots in the contest, Anderson now has the most blocks by a Jag in single game this season.

THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Terry Fowler

- Opening Statement: "I am so proud of our kids and how they fought to get back in the ball game. We gave ourselves a chance to actually win the game in regulation. Georgia State just got 22 points off of our 21 turnovers and I thought that was huge. Then they got 48 paint points but we just have to play better. We had to play shorthanded tonight without Dee Haymer, something we found out at shoot around this morning, so I thought the kids responded really well to our make shift lineups to put us in position to win a conference game on the road. We have to flush this one and be ready to go down to Georgia Southern."
