South Alabama will return to action Saturday when it faces No. 1 seed Florida at noon (ET) in an elimination game in the NCAA Gainesville Regional.Â
GAME FACTS
- Dominic Pitelli led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left-center field, and moved to second when CJ Kayfus reached on a hit by pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Anthony Vilar put two runners in scoring position with one out before Yohandy Morales drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Adrian Del Castillo followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Pitelli with the lone run of the game.Â
- Hunter Donaldson drew a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Santi Montiel. But Palmquist got Ethan Wilson to fly out to left field for the second out of the frame, and induced an inning-ending groundout to third off the bat of Michael Sandle to end the threat.
NOTES
- Sandle extended his on-base streak to 23 games with a two-out double to left field in the top of the first inning.
- Cam Tissue extended his on-base streak to six games with a one-out single up the middle in the top of the fifth inning.  Â
- Wilson's on-base streak was snapped at nine games.

- Right-hander Jackson Boyd tossed four scoreless innings without allowing a hit, and struck out four against three walks.
- Sandle went 2-for-4 with a double and one triple to lead the Jags at the plate.
- The loss marked the first time South Alabama has been shut out since Feb. 19, 2020, at No. 4 Vanderbilt.
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
- Opening Statement:
"First off, congratulations to Miami. They played a very good game. Both clubs pitched extremely well. There wasn't a lot of offense tonight. We had a couple of chances, but didn't do enough. I credit (Alejandro) Rosario, he pitched a good ballgame. It was hard to get him up in the air. Mike (Sandle) got him up in the air twice and had a double and a triple. We tried, we just couldn't hit enough balls up in the air. I would have had guys move up a little closer (in the box) because he had a good sinker, but he was throwing 95 (mph) and I wanted to give him a little more time. We were just missing that big hit today, that's all."
- On facing Florida in an elimination game:
"We have to pitch well and swing the bats better. We need to be better offensively for sure. Our pitching and defense put us in a position to win today, but it didn't happen. We'll get some rest and move on, and play a very good University of Florida team tomorrow."
- On Tyler Lehrmann and Jackson Boyd:
"(Tyler) Lehrmann was outstanding for us today. Jackson Boyd is the right-handed version of Lehrmann. Both of those guys gave us a chance to win today."
Center fielder Michael Sandle
- On Miami starting pitcher Alejandro Rosario:
"He had a deceptive delivery. We knew coming in that he was a hard-throwing guy with a little bit of sink, so we were just trying to look for pitches over the plate. He didn't really do it that often, but we had a couple of opportunities and just couldn't find that big hit to get us over that hump."
- On facing Florida in an elimination game:
"We know Florida is good. We just need to stick to our approach, and we can't get down. We've had our backs against the wall all year, so as long as we just stick to what we're doing then I think it is going to work out for us."
