HOVLAND SELECTED FOR WOMEN’S GOLF NCAA BATON ROUGE REGIONAL

4/28/2021 2:46:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – University of South Alabama women's golfer Julie Hovland was selected to compete as an individual at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Baton Rouge Regional May 10-12 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.

Hovland was one of six individuals selected to compete in the Baton Rouge Regional, which also features 18 teams including host LSU.

"Julie played great all year, and was one of the first individuals picked at-large and deserved to be," head coach Matt Luther said. "It's great for her to keep moving and get to try and play for a national championship. It's pretty special to be picked. There are thousands of student-athletes across the country and 24 at-large regional bids. I think it is a good spot for her. We have been there before, and it's the only course of the four that has Bermuda and playing conditions that we're used to seeing. She is just going to prepare and get ready to go play like she would any other tournament."

Hovland finished tied for third at the Sun Belt Conference Championship, April 18-20 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., with a three-round, 4-under par total of 140 after the final round was canceled due to unplayable course conditions. It marked her fourth consecutive top-five finish of the spring. Hovland will enter the NCAA postseason with a 71.46 stroke average in nine events this season, which encompasses 26 rounds.

She earned individual medalist honors at two events this season, the USA Intercollegiate and the Lady Red Wolves Classic, and finished runner-up at the UNF Collegiate. She has recorded 14 rounds under par this season.

Hovland is the first Jaguar to qualify for the NCAA postseason since Jennifer Krupa in 1997.

Of the 384 student-athletes selected to participate in the NCAA postseason, 132 will advance to the championships finals. Six teams and three individuals will advance from each regional.

The NCAA national championships will be May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., with the final three days of the championships televised live by Golf Channel.
