LACKIE EARNS BOTH NATIONAL AND LEAGUE PITCHING ACCOLADES

3/9/2021 1:54:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – After tossing a complete-game shutout and guiding for the University of South Alabama softball team to the program's first-ever, win over No. 2 Alabama on Sunday, Jaguar pitcher Olivia Lackie was named on Tuesday as both the Wilson/NFCA and Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.

Her selection as the national Pitcher of the Week by Wilson/NFCA marks just the second time a South Alabama player has received a national weekly honor. Former Jag Devin Brown as named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 22, 2016.

The league honor is the second of the season for Lackie, while it also marks the 44th time in program history that South has had a player earn a weekly honor from the Sun Belt. The Walker, La., native's selection also marks the 25th time the program has had a player selected as the SBC's Pitcher of the Week.

With Lackie's selection, South Alabama has had either a player or a pitcher earn the league weekly honor in three of the four weeks of the season, as Belle Wolfenden was named the player of the week following the opening weekend of the season.

Lackie was selected to her third all-tournament this past weekend after helping South Alabama pick up three victories at the Easton T-Town Showdown. Three of her four appearances came in starts in the circle for the Jaguars, and in her 20.2 innings of work, the freshman struck out 26, while only issuing two extra-base hits and six walks and held opponents to a .176 batting average and a 1.35 earned run average.

Lackie began the weekend with a victory (9-2) over Northern Iowa and didn't allow a run. She struck out 10 of the first 14 UNI batters that she faced and carried a perfect game into the fifth before having Taylor Hogan reach on a two-out, infield single.

On Saturday, Lackie went the distance and struck out 10 more batters, while allowing just one earned run. The 10-strikeout performance was Lackie's third double-digit strike out game of the season and her second of the weekend.

The freshman righty was even better on Sunday as she helped South Alabama pick up the victory over the Crimson Tide – the Jaguars' highest victory over a ranked opponent. Lackie tossed her second complete game of the season, struck out six and held Alabama to a season-low three hits, while not issuing a walk. The Tide came into the game hitting .324 as a team.

Matched up against Montana Fouts, Lackie only used 102 pitches and threw 73 for strikes, while not throwing more than 13 pitches in an inning through the first four frames.

After allowing a leadoff double in the fifth inning, Lackie responded to the big moment as she struck out Bailey Dowling looking and then retired Savannah Woodard and pinch hitter Lexi Kilfoyl swinging to end the inning and strand the Tide base runner and preserve the one-run lead.

While Alabama was able to put the tying run aboard each of the final two innings, Lackie didn't allow a Crimson Tide runner to advance passed first.

Lackie currently holds a 7-3 record on the season with a 2.05 ERA to go along with a team-best two shut outs. The freshman ranks second in the Sun Belt in strikeouts with 84 and is holding opponents to a .165 batting average.

Lackie and South Alabama will travel to Ole Miss on Wednesday for a midweek matchup before returning home to open up Sun Belt Conference play against Appalachian State with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch versus the Rebels is set for 5 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
