FUJIOKA VOTED SUN BELT’S WOMEN’S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama senior Yu Fujioka was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon. This honor is the third of Fujioka's Jaguar career as she was awarded the title twice during the 2018 season.

Fujioka improved to an overall 7-5 record in doubles play after recording wins against North Florida and Coastal Carolina. The doubles team, Yu Fujioka and Nikola Kohoutova defeated Lucia Montano and Constanza Gorches of North Florida 6-3 on court two on Sun., March 7. The duo earned their second consecutive doubles victory against Victoire De Samucewicz and Kristyna of Coastal Carolina (6-2) at the No. 2 position on Sat., March 13, to give the Jaguars a one-point advantage.

The Funabashi, Japan native went 2-0 in singles action, with both matches coming in straight sets last weekend. Fujioka extended the Jags' lead to 2-0 against Coastal Carolina, with her singles win against Somer Dalla-Bona (6-3,6-3) on court one. The Jaguars ended the day with a 4-1 victory over the Chanticleers.

Fujioka recorded her second consecutive singles victory in straight sets last Sunday as she defeated Maria Zacarias of Appalachian State (6-3, 6-2), improving her overall singles record to 9-3 this season. South Alabama cruised to a 6-1 win over the Mountainers for a 3-0 record in conference play.

Fujioka and the Jaguars will return to action this weekend as they host Georgia Southern on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Georgia State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
