MOBILE, Ala. – Former University of South Alabama women's soccer standout Athanasia Moraitou has signed a contract to play in Germany's top women's professional division the Women Bundesliga with SV Meppen.
Sportverein Meppen 1912 e.V., the club's official full name, is located in the city of Meppen in Northwest Germany
The center midfielder played two years at South as a graduate student, while racking up accolades for her on the field and in the classroom accomplishments. Graduating from her master's program in Public Administration after the fall season, Moraitou moved on from the Jaguar women's soccer program following the Sun Belt tournament in November.
During her two years at USA, Moraitou was named Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year in 2019, First Team All-Sun Belt in 2019 and Second Team All-Sun Belt in 2020. The Waiblingen, Germany native made 24 appearances with 22 starts in the Jaguar kit scoring a pair of goals with 10 assists in her career.
The Greek international has frequently been called to play with the Hellenic National Team with a position in the starting 11 at right midfield in the last two appearances while at South.
With Moraitou signing, she is the second Jaguar to ink a professional contract in Europe in slightly over four months as Briana Morris signed with AGF in early September.
