JAG BASEBALL FALLS AT NO. 4 VANDERBILT

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt right-hander Jack Leiter tossed five scoreless innings without allowing a hit, and struck out 12 in his collegiate debut to lead the No. 4 Commodores to a 3-0 win over University of South Alabama baseball Tuesday at Hawkins Field.

Leiter (1-0) issued one walk while striking out 12 Jaguar batters to earn the win. South Alabama (2-2) will return to action Wednesday when it closes its two-game set with No. 4 Vanderbilt at 4:30 p.m. at Hawkins Field.

GAME FACTS
- Vanderbilt took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out, two-run single to center field by Ty Duvall.
- Ethan Wilson drew a two-out walk in the top of the fourth inning, which marked the first Jaguar base runner of the game.
- Vandy loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out single by Austin Martin, one-out walk by Cooper Davis and a two-out walk by Mason Hickman. But Jag right-hander Matt Boswell induced an inning-ending groundout to shortstop off the bat of Isaiah Thomas to escape the jam and keep the Jag deficit at two runs.
- Wilson reached on a one-out infield single to shortstop in the top of the seventh for the first Jaguar hit of the game.
-Vanderbilt extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh when Hickman hit a potential inning-ending double play on a grounder to second, but the Jags only got the putout at second while a Commodore runner scored on the play.

NOTES
- USA right-hander Matt Boswell (0-1) turned in a quality start in his first career start, allowing one earned run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks in six innings pitched in the loss.
- USA struck out 19 times, marking the fourth straight game it has struck out 10 or more times offensively.
- Carter Quinn recorded his first career hit, which came in the form of a leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

- On the Jaguar pitchers:
"(Matt) Boswell was really good. All you can ask of your pitchers is to give you a chance to win, and he did that; he kept us in every single inning. I thought all of the guys who pitched tonight did a really nice job. They were exceptional on the mound."

- On the offense:
"He (Jack Leiter) was good, and we didn't do a good enough job with him. We chased some balls early and let some good fastballs go. He had his hand in that. Leiter would have been a (MLB) first rounder had he made himself signable. He was 92-95 with two good breaking balls, and he was really good. He made some mistakes and we either missed them or took them, and we chased some balls to let him get into some good counts and get ahead. You can't give good pitchers like that, both Leiter and (Thomas) Schultz, free strikes. We have to be little more disciplined on some balls out of the zone, and we have to be aggressive on balls in the zone. You're still going to strike out because that's part of the game, but we will start to clean it up and the numbers will start to go down. We got pushed a little bit tonight, but we did not get pushed around. Our guys fought; we played all nine innings and 27 outs, it just didn't go our way. We'll show up tomorrow, and our mindset is to win tomorrow."
