Opening Kick
• South is on the road for the first time since beginning the year at Southern Mississippi on Sept. 3.
• This is the first of two straight trips for the Jags to Sun Belt East Division members with a visit to Coastal Carolina scheduled next week.
• With a win at USM to open the campaign, the Jaguars are looking for multiple road victories in a season for the first time since 2015.
• It's the fourth year in a row the South will play a game in the Peach State.
• The Jaguars' last win in Georgia was on Nov. 30, 2013, when they claimed a 38-17 decision at Georgia State in their final SBC road contest that fall.
South Alabama-Georgia Southern Series Notes
• The Eagles have won each of the first six match-ups between the two teams, with the first five of those decided by a double-figure margin.
• GS has averaged 51.7 points per contest in the first three meetings in Statesboro, more than double the 24 per outing the Eagles have scored in the three games between the two programs in Mobile.
• The Jaguars have scored 10-plus points in each of the last two match-ups after accomplishing the feat once in the first four.
• The first two series meetings in Mobile — in September 2014 and '16 — were the Jaguars' Sun Belt opener those seasons.
• The Eagles' 52-0 win on Nov. 18, 2017, is the only time South has been shut out in the program's first 131 games dating back to its inception in 2009.
Notes From The Last Georgia Southern Meeting
• The Jags' four first downs and 39 total plays were the fewest recorded in a game in school history.
• It was the last time the USA defense gave up less than 100 yards passing in a contest.
• The performance marked the first 100-yard receiving game of Kawaan Baker's career, with his second-quarter touchdown South's longest offensive play from scrimmage in 2019.
• Nick Mobley led all players with 14 stops, still a career-best total (he matched that figure in the Jaguars' season-opening victory at Southern Miss on Sept. 3).
• With DJ Daniels and Kelvin Johnson also adding double-digit tackle totals, it was the first time since Nov. 11, 2017, that USA had three individuals with 10 or more stops in a game.
Notes On Campbell's Coaching/Playing Career
• Campbell's 167-74 mark as a head coach includes going 33-15 over four years at Central Arkansas from 2014-17, where he guided the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances before taking over at South Alabama.
• He has led two programs to national championships — Delta (Miss.) State in 2000 at the NCAA Division II level and Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. to the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association crown.
• In 20 seasons no team coached by Campbell finished below .500 prior to the 2018 campaign.
• Campbell has coached on the staffs of Pat Dye (Auburn graduate assistant, 1988-89) and Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State assistant, 2003).
• Campbell and Jaguar coordinators Kenny Edenfield and Greg Stewart were teammates on Troy's 1987 NCAA Division II national championship squad.
Big Night Gets Baker Honored
Baker caught six passes for a career-best 154 yards and three touchdowns last time out in South's victory over ULM, helping lead the Jaguars past a Warhawk defense that entered play allowing just 167 yards per game passing.  After recording the highest receiving yardage total in the Sun Belt last weekend while matching the most touchdown receptions in the league this year, the senior was named the SBC co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.  Baker's 80-yard touchdown catch in the final minute of the opening quarter was the second-longest pass play in school history and the longest in the conference this season.  He added scores from 16 and five yards out in the second half to post multiple touchdowns in the same game for first time since South visited Louisiana on Nov. 17, 2018.  With the effort — his second 100-yard game of the year, and third of his career — Baker went over 100 catches and 1,500 receiving yards in his career while finishing the night tied for second on South's career record list with 14 touchdown receptions and moving into the top five on the program's all-time scoring list.
Tolbert Now In Top 10
Baker wasn't the only Jaguar wideout to reach a career milestone against the Warhawks, with Jalen Tolbert doing the same after adding a pair of catches for 68 yards.  The junior's first reception in the opening quarter for a gain of 27 yards gave him more than 1,000 in his career, and when he added a 41-yard catch midway through the second period he moved past Courtney Smith — the first Jag ever to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl — into 10th place on the school's all-time list in the category.  On Tuesday, Tolbert was one of five individuals added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.
Trotter Leads To Touchdowns
Not only did QB Desmond Trotter complete 8-of-12 attempts for 184 yards and all three scoring passes to Baker, he added 33 yards on eight carries as well including posting the first rushing touchdown of his career on a five-yard run in the third quarter.  It was the first time that the sophomore — who tied a career high accounting for four scores — has surpassed 200 yards of total offense since the Jaguars' season-opening victory at Southern Miss on Sept. 3.  Trotter needs 157 yards of total offense to post 2,000 in his career, while with 167 yards he will move into the top 10 on the school's all-time list in the category.
Safety Making Stops
Junior Keith Gallmon recorded seven solo stops against the Warhawks, a total that included his first tackle behind the line this fall, to share team-high honors in the win. Â It was the first time the safety has paced South in stops since collecting 10 against nationally-ranked Appalachian State on Oct. 26 last season, and he also added his fourth pass broken up in the last two outings as well; with five this year, that's one more than Gallmon recorded the last two seasons combined.
In The Middle Of It All
Mobley matched Gallmon with seven tackles last time out, as he has now led or shared team-best honors in the category in four of the Jags' five outings this fall. Â The effort gave the junior linebacker the team lead with 46 this fall, moving him into second in the league rankings entering the week.
Grinding The Ground Game To A Halt
After surrendering just 94 yards on the ground to the Warhawks last time out, it marked the second straight contest that the Jaguar defense limited the opposition below 100 rushing yards (Texas State managed only 88 the previous week in USA's Sun Belt opener). Â That marked the first time the unit has held its foe to a double-digit rushing total in consecutive outings since turning the trick against Louisiana and Georgia State on Nov. 12 and 21, 2015.
Getting It Right In The Red Zone
Coming into the ULM game, South had forced two stops in the red zone in the team's first four contests this fall. Â The Jag defense matched that total against the Warhawks, with the first of those stops coming after ULM advanced to the USA-14 on its opening possession of the night. Â It was the first occasion that the Jaguars have forced the opposition into multiple empty possessions after reaching the red zone since doing so in the 2017 season finale at New Mexico State.
Going For Distance
With his only field goal of the game in the win over the Warhawks, Diego Guajardo became just the third individual to make a field goal of 50 yards or longer in program history with USA's first from that distance since Gavin Patterson connected from 50 yards out in an Oct. 13, 2018, victory over Alabama State.  The sophomore is the first Jaguar placekicker to have multiple field goals covering 49 or more yards — he made one from that distance in the home opener against Tulane Sept. 12 — in the same season since Michel Chapuseaux accomplished the feat during the 2012 campaign.
