Opening Kick
• The Jaguars play the first of two consecutive home contests when Jackson State visits Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Saturday.
• The Tigers are the only NCAA Football Championship opponent on South's schedule this fall.
• USA is 12-3 all-time against current NCAA FCS members, which includes wins in each of their last five match-ups with schools from the level since dropping a 22-21 decision to Southern Utah in the 2013 opener.
• Included in that record is a 9-3 mark at home in contests against FCS institutions.
• The Jags have a 2-3 overall record against schools from Mississippi, with four of those five contests coming against Mississippi State — including a 21-20 win in Starkville to start the 2016 season — and Ole Miss.

Southwestern Conference Match-Up Notes
• This marks the third straight season that the Jags will play host to a Southwestern Athletic Conference school.
• The Jaguars are 3-0 all-time against SWAC opponents, having outscored the trio by a collective 125-10 margin.
• South's previous results against league schools are:
  • W, 35-3 vs. Mississippi Valley State, 11/3/11
  • W, 45-0 vs. Alabama A&M, 9/14/17
  • W, 45-7 vs. Alabama State, 10/13/18
• The Alabama State victory is the last time USA has recorded a shutout.
• The Jaguars will also face Grambling (Sept. 12, 2020) — the program's first scheduled contest in Hancock Whitney Stadium — and Alcorn State (Sept. 25, 2021) at home the next two seasons.

Notes On Campbell's Coaching/Playing Career
• Campbell's 162-63 mark as a head coach includes going 33-15 over four years at Central Arkansas from 2014-17, where he guided the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances before taking over at South Alabama.
• He has led two programs to national championships — Delta (Miss.) State in 2000 at the NCAA Division II level and Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. to the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association crown.
• In 20 seasons no team coached by Campbell finished below .500 prior to the 2018 campaign.
• Campbell has coached on the staffs of Pat Dye (Auburn graduate assistant, 1988-89) and Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State assistant, 2003).
• Campbell and Jaguar coordinators Kenny Edenfield and Greg Stewart were teammates on Troy's 1987 NCAA Division II national championship squad.

Home Cooking
• The Jags are 42-21 (66.7 percent) all-time at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
• USA has finished .500 or better at home in nine of the program's first 10 seasons.
• The Jaguars have an 8-7 record at home in non-league action since beginning Sun Belt Conference play in 2012.
• That includes wins in six of their last nine non-conference home contests dating back to the 2015 campaign.
• South has gone 4-6 in its home opener all-time, with the team's last win in their Mobile debut a 33-23 defeat of Gardner-Webb on Sept. 5, 2015.

Linebackers Lead Effort In Lincoln
In the opener last weekend at Nebraska, South's defense limited the Cornhuskers to just 276 yards of total offense including only 66 after the half.  Leading the way for the Jags were the team's two starting inside linebackers — Nick Mobley posted a career-high 10 stops to pace the unit, the first time he has reached double digits in the category in his career, while Roy Yancey was credited with a career-high eight stops and a forced fumble.  Their efforts helped the Jaguars give up only 98 yards on the ground, marking the first time USA has limited its opponent below 100 yards rushing in back-to-back contests since accomplishing the feat against Louisiana and Georgia State on Nov. 12 and 21, 2015.

Jag Offense Outworking The Opposition
After recording 314 yards offensively in the contest, the Jags have now outgained the opposition in three straight outings dating back to last season.  Cephus Johnson threw for 231 yards against the Cornhuskers, rushing for the Jags' initial score in the opening period before throwing a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter; the three touchdowns the sophomore quarterback accounted for matched his total in eight appearances in 2018.

Clock Control
After controlling the ball for over 21 minutes in the second half last time out, the Jaguars won the time of possession battle in the game for the eighth time in the last nine outings.  USA finished the day holding the ball for 34 minutes and 13 seconds, making it the third contest during that stretch that the Jag offense has been in possession for 34 minutes or more.

Minter On The Move
In the opener against the Cornhuskers, Tra Minter gained 158 all-purpose yards — a total that led all players — to became just fifth individual in program history to surpass 2,500-plus all-purpose yards in a career.  In passing former wideout Jeremé Jones to move into fourth place on the school's all-time list in the category, the senior's performance included catching a career-high five passes — most on the team — for 47 yards as well as matching a previous career best with five kickoff returns.

Slot Production
Receivers Kawaan Baker and Cade Sutherland both finished the Nebraska contest with four receptions, with the former matching a previous high set on four other occasions while it was the most of the latter's career.  Baker posted a team-best 59 receiving yards to pace the squad in the category for the third time in the last five outings dating back to last season, while Sutherland doubled his output in 12 contests a year ago.

Daniels' Day
Senior DJ Daniels recorded seven total tackles in the season opener including 1½ behind the line of scrimmage, both career-high totals.  That equals the number of stops the safety was credited with in the last four games of 2018 combined.

Say What?
With Tyree Turner limited to just two series in the opening quarter due to injury, fellow senior Jeffery Whatley posted four stops to pace the Jag defensive line at Nebraska.  While Whatley fell one tackle shy of matching his previous best total, he was credited for a sack late in the third quarter that was his first since joining the program.
