Date: 8/7
Time: 3:30-5:15 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)
Offensive Player of the Day: Jalin Buie, Jr., RB, Jacksonville, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Buie: "The group for me that has been really impressive as of late are the running backs. Tra Minter has had a bunch of good days in a row and I probably could've mentioned him a few days ago. Two other guys that I've noticed in camp are Jared [Wilson] and Carlos [Davis], but the player of the day today was Jalin Buie. He's really stepped up and made some plays. He picked up a big blitz on third down, and for a small guy, he stepped right in there."
Defensive Player of the Day: Tré Young, Jr, S, Mobile, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Young: "A guy I kept noticing today that was playing fast was Tré Young. I saw him break on a couple of balls that takes fast people to get there and make a play on. He's playing hard and I think he's learned the defense. We're fired up about him."
Play of the Day: On his last play of the afternoon, Nick Mobley shot through a gap to record a tackle for loss as the running back was looking to get to the edge for a big gain.
Team period highlights: The practice included three separate team periods, with South's offense running a mix of plays in the first and third while the second featured the unit facing third-and-long situations.
Miscellaneous Notes
-The opening 30 minutes of the workout included primarily individual drills.
-There were also separate special teams periods focusing on field goals/extra points and kickoff returns.
-During 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, Cephus Johnson completed all 10 of his attempts, including finding Jalen Tolbert on four occasions.
-After Tylan Morton hit Logan Morgan for a 28-yard touchdown in the same period, the Jaguar defense responded by breaking up a trio of passes with Patrick Rosette, Roy Yancey and Kwameh Lewis contributing one each.
-Taji Stewart was credited with 1½ sacks during the team's third down period, while Young and Travis Reed broke up passes in that segment of the practice.
-Johnson found Tolbert and Kawaan Baker in the final team period of the day, while both Desmond Trotter and Morton posted multiple completions as well.
-After Mobley's play, Taj Bickham broke up a pass and Jamall Hickbottom followed with a sack on the next two offensive snaps.
-All practices are closed to the general public.
Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the Jaguars' first week of practice: "We've made progress every day, that's the thing I've been pleased with; we've gotten better each time out. We still have a long way to go — which you would expect after six practices — but I like the progress that we've made."
-On Wednesday's workout: "I thought today was a good day on both sides. We rushed and got some pressure on the quarterback, and we also converted on a couple of third-and-longs where our quarterbacks sat in the pocket to complete the throw and catch."
-On which newcomers have stood out since the beginning of preseason camp: "We've had quite a few of the young guys step forward, I've been pleased with a lot of the play of some of our new guys. Tre'Veon Hamilton sticks out, he is going to be a good football player and really help our receiving corps, and Jamel Thomas will be an immediate help. Defensively, Tré Young has had a good camp so far and Kelvin Johnson has done some good things. Tomorrow is our first scrimmage, so we will find out a lot more after it's over."
-On what he is looking for in the scrimmage: "The big things I'm looking for in the scrimmage are who can make plays, who has been able to process what we've taught in the first six days and can go out and apply it in a game type of situation, and who can execute the details of the assignment. If you have a bust here or there, we don't want that but we've got three weeks to teach you what to do. We need to know who is capable of doing it, who is capable of processing the information they've been given, and when things are happening fast who can make plays. It's about the execution and who has put themselves in a position that we need to get them the ball, or get them on the field where they can help in a specific package — who has taken that next step."
Up next: South Alabama will conduct its first full scrimmage of the preseason at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility.
