UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/5

Date: 8/5
Time: 9:30-11:15 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Player of the Day: Tre'Veon Hamilton, Sr., WR, Humble, Texas
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Hamilton: "There have been a couple of guys who keep standing out, but Tre'Veon caught my eye today on a big play down the field.  I have noticed that he has started to come on a little bit, and we need that because we are looking for depth there."

Defensive Player of the Day: Charles Coleman III, R-Fr., DL, Huntsville, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Coleman III: "We have a few young guys up front who haven't had a lot said about them, but every day I have seen Charles get better and better.  I think he is handling the pressure of being a guy who we are counting on to play, he is going to help us this fall."

Play of the Day: As the second team period of the morning was drawing to a close, Dajon Richard was able to get open to catch a pass from Tylan Morton before making a move past the last defensive back to reach the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown.

Team period highlights: There were a pair of team periods in the practice, with both — the first covering 16 plays, the second 24 snaps — featuring the offense mixing run and pass calls against the Jaguar defense.

Miscellaneous Notes
-This marked the second straight day that South worked out in shells, and was the last session prior to the team's first practice in full pads.
-Although it was the fourth day in a row that the Jags have practiced, this was the first time during preseason camp that the program has worked out in the morning.
-Edenfield also noted the performance of the group at the Jaguars' 'H' wide receiver position — Kawaan Baker, Jalen Wayne, Cade Sutherland, Devin Voisin and Richard — saying, "They do the dirty work a lot of times.  That group had a very consistent day."
-In the opening team period, USA's defense had three straight stops in the backfield recorded by Jordon Beaton, Rocel McWilliams and Gi'Narious Johnson while Tyree Turner was credited with a sack in the second team period.
-Sterrling Fisher picked off a pass near the goal line for the lone takeaway of the morning by the unit.
-Both Gus Nave and Kwameh Lewis broke up passes during team period action.
-Hamilton also had a catch for a long gain for the Jaguar offense during the second team period.
-Sutherland recorded three receptions in the two team periods, adding a pair during 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills as well.
-The lone special teams period of the morning focused on punting.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the first four days of camp: "It's been a good four days of practice.  The last two days we've been in shells and tomorrow we put the pads on for the first time.  Defensively, they put some things in [today] that we haven't worked against and some of the movement stuff that they did was good for us to see; it will make us better on both sides of the ball.  We did a lot of good things today.  The defensive line kind of got after our offensive line in the first of the team periods, but I thought we bounced back in the second part and the o-line executed well."
-On what he's looking for tomorrow from the offense as the Jaguars go in full pads for the first time this fall: "Offensively, I want to see us execute and keep the ball off the ground.  Typically, if you have turnover issues [in full pads and scrimmages] is where they show up.  I want us to do a good job protecting the ball, communicating and just our execution.  Let's get the ball into our playmaker's hands and execute the offense.  I want to get a look at Damean Bivens because he's a big back, and I want to see Jalin Buie as well; he's been limited due to injury since we've been here, but the first few days of practice in shorts, he's made some plays.  He's kind of jumped back up in the conversation for that position because he's looked really good early on in camp."
-On his expectations for South's defense in full pads: "Defensively, I want to see us play hard.  It will be the first time tackling [this camp] for us and I want to see how our tackling looks.  I also want to see how we handle adversity; how do you handle things when they don't go exactly as planned, because that's going to happen in a game.  Do you reach down deep and find a way to make it work?  In shorts, you don't have to do that.  We can play 7-on-7 football all day and that situation never arises.  The only time that situation really arises is in full gear and in the heat.  I'm looking for some great competition tomorrow and seeing who can overcome whatever adversity arises."
-On the leadership of the team's veteran players: "We have had several people take on and step forward into leadership roles.  It's good for our young players coming in to see our older guys pushing themselves and making themselves better each day; that's true leadership to me, and it bleeds over to the younger guys."

Up next: The Jags' first practice in full pads will get underway at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility.
