UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/19

Date: 8/19
Time: 3:30 p.m.-5:15 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Shells

Offensive Player of the Day: Zac Crosby, Jr., TE, Yulee, Fla.; Cephus Johnson, So., QB, Mobile, Ala.; Tylan Morton, Jr., QB, Griffin, Ga., and Desmond Trotter, R-Fr., QB, Irondale, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Crosby, Johnson, Morton and Trotter: "The quarterbacks did well today, we did a couple of two-minute situations and Cephus, Tylan and Desmond all did a really nice job which I thought was good.  Another guy who has showed up is Zac, he made a couple of plays today that were really big."

Defensive Player of the Day: Kade Koler, R-Fr, LB, Madison, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Koler: "A guy who is getting better every day after starting camp a little slow, who is picking it up the last couple of weeks to get back to where he was in the spring is Kade Koler.  He's coming on, which is good because we will be counting on him in that first game."

Play of the Day: On the final play of the first team period, freshman wide out Dajon Richard made an outstanding diving catch in between a pair of defenders along the right sideline for a big gain on a pass from Desmond Trotter.

Team period highlights: The practice was highlighted with three 10-minute team periods working on the run-pass-option game, third down situations and the two-minute offense, and closed with a five-minute segment focusing on tempo.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Of the 16 snaps during the first team period which focused on the run-pass-option, 10 were run plays while six pass plays.
-During the third-down team period, the defense came up with stops on nine of the 11 snaps working on medium and long situations.
-The defense set the tone early in the period with an interception by Keith Gallmon on the first play and a sack by Jordon Beaton and Jeffery Whatley on the second play.
-The highlight of the period came on the second play of the second series when Tylan Morton connected with Kawaan Baker for a 63-yard scoring strike.
-Starting from their own 35, South's offense was able to score on all three possession during the two-minute drill, recording a pair of field goals and a touchdown.
-Frankie Onate (19 yards) and Diego Guajardo (37 yards) were both good on their field goal attempts, while Morton was credited with a 57-yard touchdown run.
-During the first drive of the period, Cephus Johnson connected with Davyn Flenord for a 42-yard catch with the offense facing a third-and-six situation early in the drive to move the offense down inside the red zone.
-The final series saw both sides of the ball make key plays with the first coming on a 20-plus yard catch by Zac Crosby on a fourth-and-eight situation to keep the drive alive.
-Jay Woods then prevented the offense from scoring its second touchdown as he was able to break up a pass in the right corner of the end zone.
-The special teams unit also worked on punt coverage and kickoff coverage during the session.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On what's next as they break camp: "Today kind of close up camp. We were able to work on two-minute situations and a lot of other different deals that we needed to hit before the close of camp. Tomorrow's the first day of classes and our guys will be off. When we return [on Wednesday] we'll switch our full focus to Nebraska."
-On where he feels the team is at the close of camp: "I like where we're at; we're not ready to play a game yet, but that's why we didn't schedule it for August 20. We still have 11 days. There are still some things we need to clean up. Today was the first day that we threw a bunch of noise at them, but I thought our communication was good for the first day of doing that. We'll continue to clean up that stuff as we move forward. I liked the way we got on and off the field. I thought our tempo was better. It was a little cooler today, but it was still humid, which I was glad to see. I thought we moved around really well. I think we're getting some quickness back in our step and at this stage you need to be doing that."
-On the players starting classes this week and transitioning out of camp: "We've handled each transition well so far. We talked with the players the other day about all the distractions that come with being a college football player. They have to focus on their academics and athletics. There are a lot of different things that go on around a college campus and they have to remember what they're here for – to get an education and be a great football player. Again, we've handled each transition well so far and we need to hit this one the right way."

Up next: South Alabama will be off Tuesday for the first day of fall classes, and will return to the practice field Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the James A. and Frances H. Football Practice Facility.
