MOBILE, Ala. – Former University of South Alabama soccer student-athlete
Hannah Godfrey has signed a professional contract with Tottenham Hotspur Women, the club announced earlier today.
Godfrey, a three-time all-Sun Belt Conference honoree, joins the London-based club which is debuting in the Barclay's FA Women's Super League for the 2019-20 campaign.
The Thornton-Cleveleys, England native was also named the conference's defensive player of the year in 2017 and led the Jaguars to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
"It will be an honour to wear the shirt and be in an environment where everyone is excited for a huge season ahead," Godfrey told the team web site. "I am so grateful for this opportunity and I can't wait to contribute to the success of the Club."
Godfrey was a second-team pick as a sophomore after playing a team-high 2,022 minutes and leading a defense that ranked first in the league and set a new school record in goals against average (0.84) and shutouts (12). The following season, she once again paced the team in minutes played (1,935) as the Jaguars led the Sun Belt in shutouts while ranking second in goals against average, and moved up to first-team all-conference honors, in addition to her defensive player of the year award.
As a senior, Godfrey tied for third on the team in both goals (3) and points (8) to set new career highs in both categories. The Jags were third in the Sun Belt in goals against average overall, but posted a 0.57 GAA – thanks to five shutouts – in league play to rank second behind regular-season champion Texas State.
Prior to joining the Jaguars, she spent time with both Manchester City W.F.C. and Blackburn Rovers L.F.C., where captained Blackburn to an FA Cup final appearance.
Tottenham open their inaugural season in the WSL Sept. 8 at Chelsea.
