CAJUNS WIN RUBBER MATCH TO CLINCH SERIES WITH JAG BASEBALL

Box Score (PDF)

LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana scored four unanswered runs, including a pair of fourth-inning home runs, to defeat the University of South Alabama baseball team 4-1 in Sunday's rubber match at Russo Park.

USA (15-20, 5-10 Sun Belt) took an early lead with a run in the second inning, but UL (19-20, 8-7 Sun Belt) responded with four unanswered runs en route to a series-clinching win.

South Alabama will return to action Tue., April 16, when it hosts Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.

GAME FACTS
- USA loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second inning. Carter Perkins led off the frame with a single to right field, and Santi Montiel followed with a double to right field. Colton Thomas then reached on a hit by pitch to load the bases for Dakota Dailey, who delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to score Perkins with the game's first run.
- The Cajuns tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a one-out solo home run by Todd Lott.
- Louisiana took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back solo home runs by Orynn Veillon and Kole McKinnon.
- UL pushed across the game's final run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Lott.

NOTES
- Wells Davis extended his hitting streak and on-base streak to five games with a two-out single in the top of the first inning.
- Ethan Wilson extended his on-base streak to seven games with an intentional walk in the second inning.
- Kaleb DeLaTorre extended his hitting streak and on-base streak to seven games with a one-out double in the third inning.
- Jaguar left-hander Jared Proctor (0-4) tied his season high in strikeouts with five, and allowed three runs on five hits while issuing a pair of walks in four innings pitched in the loss.
- UL right-hander Jack Burk (1-0) allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts against one walk in six innings pitched to earn the win.
- DeLaTorre, Perkins and Montiel recorded two hits apiece, while Dailey drove in the lone Jaguar run in the contest.

Head Coach Mark Calvi
- On the loss:
"Jared (Proctor) threw 80 pitches, went four innings and gave up three earned runs, but I thought he did well; he competed. We didn't execute a rundown for him early, which probably cost him another 15 pitches. But I thought Jared threw some good changeups and breaking balls. All you can ask is the starting pitcher to go out, give you a chance and keep you in the ballgame, and that's what he did. And so did Tyler Perez. Their (UL) guy (Jack Burk) did a good job pitching, and we were a little passive in some situations on some pitches. We just didn't do enough offensively today. We pitched well enough to win, but we didn't have enough offense today."
