-With just eight individuals dressing for the contest, Lowe made the first start of her career.
-She ended the night with the most assists handed out by a Jaguar this season and the highest total recorded by a South player since Siedah Banks had 12 in a win over Mobile on on Dec. 15, 2010.
-Buster also had a career-high scoring total after finishing with 13 points while tacking on her first two blocked shots as a Jag.
-It was just the second appearance for Mallard in her freshman season, as she entered play having been credited with a rebound and a block in her collegiate debut against Alabama last week.
THEY SAID IT
Head coach Terry Fowler
Opening statement: "It was really good for us to come out tonight and get off to a great start. Damaya [Telemaque] got hurt in practice yesterday, so we weren't sure how we were going to be; she tried to go some at shoot around today. We're already limited [in our depth] so with her injury, we are more short-handed. Our players really stepped up and played major minutes tonight. We're excited to get the win; this group really needed to feel that and hopefully we can feed off of this as we head into our next ball game."
On Jaylen Mallard: "Prior to Jaylan's injury, that's what she was doing in practice; we'd seen it and we just couldn't wait to see it on a game day. Fortunately tonight, we were able to do that. She's gone from surgery, to doing nothing, to coming out and giving us 100 percent for some minutes. It's going to be a process, but it's just great to have her out there, because she's capable of doing what you saw tonight."
On the offense's performance: "It's like Antoinette said, we moved the ball well. That was an emphasis in practice this week. When the ball moves, we get the shots that we want to get. I thought the ball had been stagnant up until tonight. That was the emphasis and hopefully we can carry it on in practice and into games."
Junior C Antoinette Lewis
On her career-night performance: "My teammates did a really good job of finding me. Devyn had a career-high 12 assists; she had told me [before the game] that she was going to give it to me. I just tried to help her out and finish. My team trusted me and I just went out and played."
On Jaylen Mallard's performance: "We were very excited for her. I told her a lot during the game to just keep posting up and keep working. She makes those plays in practice, so it will eventually translate to the game. She just needed to keep working hard. We had been encouraging her, and I think that gave her a boost of confidence and helped her go."
On having five players recording double figures in the win: "I think that just came from our moving the ball around. We shared the ball and had good movement, which had translated from practice this week. We all know we can make shots, it's just a matter of doing it. We were just confident and all feeling it."
Up next: The Jaguars will be back in action at the Mitchell Center on Saturday when Tennessee State pays South a visit.
