UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/6

Date: 8/6
Time: 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Player of the Day: Tra Minter, Jr., RB, Ellaville, Ga.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Minter: "I thought Tra Minter gave good effort out there today.  I saw him hit a couple spots on the zone and that's where we really have to get better at as an offense."

Defensive Player of the Day: Tyree Vines, Sr., S, Prichard, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Vines: "Tyree is another older guy who is doing well so far in camp, he has been stepping up.  To be good on any defense you have to have guys who are relentless, Tyree has done a good job the first four days of being relentless and the guy he is supposed to be."

Play of the Day: During one of the skeleton passing drills, Jalen Tolbert made a 45-yard diving touchdown grab between two defenders on a pass delivered by Cole Garvin.

Team period highlights: The first two team periods covered 16 snaps and lasted a total of 10 minutes.  Like on Sunday, South Alabama closed out day four of camp with a 15-minute, 31-play team segment with two offensive units running plays at the same time on either side of the 50-yard line.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Of the 16 snaps during the first team period of the afternoon, 13 were run plays including the first six snaps of the segment.
-The Jaguar quarterbacks hit all three of their pass attempts during the period, highlighted by Davyn Flenord's 35-yard score from Evan Orth.
-Taji Stewart, Sean Brown, Jamall Hickbottom, Jeremiah Littles, DJ Daniels and Riley Cole were each credited with two stops during the segment with the latter also registering a sack.
-During the final team period of the day, the five quarterbacks connected with 13 different receivers and threw for a pair of touchdowns.  The unit also connected on seven straight passes at one point.
-Redshirt wide receiver Logan Morgan had a team-high three receptions and a score on a 30-yard pass from Orth during the period, while fellow redshirt quarterback Jackson Holladay connected with Parker Mason for a 35-yard touchdown.
-Defensively, Sterrling Fisher paced the squad with three tackles, while Hickbottom and Taj Bickham recorded two stops apiece.
-A.J. DeShazor and Chason Milner had a pass break up, and Roy Yancey was credited with a tackle and a quarterback hurry.
-Keon Voisin also had an interception during the final team period.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the excitement level heading into the first practice in full pads: "We're looking forward to it.  We've gotten a lot done over the first four days of practice, but we still have a long way to go, so it'll be good to get out in pads and see exactly where we're at in full gear."
-On if one area has stood out during the first four days of camp: "There really hasn't been one area that has stood out so far.  We are still early in camp and everyone's working really hard.  We haven't scrimmaged yet, but I've been pleased with the effort.  I will say that our kickers have been hitting the ball well."
-On what he is looking for out of his team as they head into the first day in full pads: "I want us to just get a little bit better than we were today.  We have a lot of young guys out here working in the first two groups.  I'd like to be assignment.  We're not going to see anything tomorrow that's a finished product or anything like that, but I want to see us keep steps forward and improving each day."
-On who stood out to him today: "I thought Josh McCulloch, a freshman offensive tackle, did a lot of good things today.  He's still got some assignments when everything starts going fast against the defense, but when he knows what he's doing, he's a really good football player."

Up next: South Alabama will be in full pads for the first time when they hit the practice field Tuesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Jaguar Training Center.
