UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/24

Date: 8/24
Time: 3:45 p.m.-5:45 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Player of the Day: Cole Garvin, Sr., QB, Newnan, Ga.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Garvin: "Without looking at the tape, I thought Cole had a really good day. The last play we had a lot of noise, with the environment cranked up and he was able to go out on a scramble and find a guy open to make a play. I thought he had a couple other good plays today too."

Defensive Player of the Day: Tobias Moss, Jr., S, Miami, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Moss: "Tobias is a guy that had been playing corner before we got here. We moved him to safety and right now he's running with the first-team. Every day he is making improvements to be a big-time safety."

Play of the Day: After a bad snap, Evan Orth was able to gather himself and delivered a 35-yard touchdown pass in stride to Jamarius Way during the first team period.

Team period highlights: The two-hour session included two team periods with the first lasting 10-minutes at the midway point of practice and a five minute session towards the end.

Miscellaneous Notes
-There were two five-minute special teams periods during Friday's practice session.
-During the first team period, 11 of the 15 snaps were run plays and both completions went for scores.  In addition to Orth's touchdown pass to Way, Cole Garvin found Khameron Taylor down the middle of the field for a 25-yard touchdown on the final play of the period.
-In the skeleton drill, the Jaguar quarterbacks went a combined 11-of-14 connecting with nine different receivers.  Sam Harris and Muarice Mayo were the lone receivers to register multiple catches as each had two receptions.
-Defensively, South was credited with three coverage sacks during the period, while A.J. DeShazor and Khalil McDonald led the unit with three tackles apiece.  Marice Fluellen was also credited with a pass break up.
-The defensive unit started the final team period off strong as Chris Henderson and Jeffery Whatley combined for a sack on the first snap of the five-minute period.  One play later, Jalen Thompson broke up what looked to be a sure completion.
-The quarterbacks closed out the period by connecting on four of their final six pass attempts.
-In addition to the two team competition periods, South's offensive and defensive units worked against scout teams for the final 15 minutes to end the day.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On what he's looking for in Saturday's mock scrimmage: "Tomorrow is just a chance for us to polish some things up and a dress rehearsal for us.  We won't do any hitting or anything like that.  We will just go through our pregame warm up and the other parts of our game day."
-On energy and execution today: "I thought the energy was better and I thought we had a better day today.  There were some good things on both sides of the ball.  Offensively, I thought we executed some things well and we protected the passer when they were under pressure.  Defensively, I thought that group defended some things well that we did in the run period."
-On who stood out to him today: "Zac Crosby had a real good day today; he's really coming on and getting better each day."

Up next: South Alabama will hold a mock scrimmage Saturday morning, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium before beginning game-week preparations for its season opener against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 1.  The scrimmage is closed to the public.
