2017-18 Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll
NEW ORLEANS – For the fourth time in as many years, the University of South Alabama Department of Athletics has equaled or broken the record number of student-athletes earning Sun Belt Conference academic honors.
A total of 186 Jaguars — including at least one member from each of South's 17 sport programs — were recognized on Thursday, with the group highlighted by 110 individuals making the Commissioner's List after posting a grade-point average of 3.5 or better for the 2017-18 academic year. The other 76 student-athletes honored were named to the Academic Honor Roll after finishing with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49.
Not only was the department successful in the classroom last season, the Jags claimed the Vic Bubas Cup presented to the league's top all-around department in competition for the fourth consecutive time as well.
Twelve of the school's sport programs had 10 or more members earn Sun Belt academic honors, highlighted by 31 individuals from the men's track and field/cross country squad making the list. On Wednesday, Jaguar men's track and field received the conference's Team GPA Award for the fifth straight year.
A total of 28 student-athletes from football and 26 from the women's track and field/cross country teams were included in the department total, with South softball contributing 20 individuals as well. After winning its fifth consecutive Sun Belt Tournament title, Jag soccer had 17 student-athletes recognized, and 13 members of the baseball program finished last year with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The volleyball squad — which set a program record with 12 conference victories last fall — had 11 members of the team qualify for recognition and women's basketball added 10 in addition to making the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational tournament.
Both the women's golf and women's tennis teams had every student-athlete enrolled both semesters last year earn Sun Belt academic honors, with the men's tennis and men's golf squads placing seven of eight and nine members who attended school in the fall and spring, respectively, on the two lists.
