UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/20

Date: 8/20
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Tra Minter, Jr., RB, Ellaville, Ga.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Minter: "I noticed Tra today, I thought he finished some runs when he broke through the line of scrimmage and he also broke some tackles.  He had a really good day today."

Defensive Player of the Day: Taj Bickham, Fr., CB, Violet, La.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Bickham: "Taj had a big-time pick in the red zone today.  I've been noticing him more and more.  He's a young guy that's making good progress."

Play of the Day: Early in the first team period of the afternoon, Cole Garvin connected with Jordan McCray for a big gain when he was able to throw the ball just out of reach of the defender into the latter's hands.

Team period highlights: There were three different team periods over the final hour of practice, two that lasted 10 minutes each with a 15-minute segment to end the workout.

Miscellaneous Notes
-This was the Jaguars' final practice before fall semester classes begin on Tuesday.
-In addition to the three team periods, the Jags also had three different periods focusing on special teams work.
-During a 10-minute portion of practice dedicated to 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, McCray caught a touchdown pass from Cephus Johnson.
-Johnson completed all but three of his attempts in the period, adding another touchdown on a four-yard connection with Jamarius Way.
-Marice Fluellen recorded the lone interception during skeleton passing drills, while Reggie Williamson, Darian Mills and Sterrling Fisher chipped in with passes defensed.
-Garvin completed his first four passes during team period action, while Johnson and Evan Orth threw for touchdowns during those periods.
-A quartet of receivers — McCray, Collier Smith, Jalen Tolbert and Way — posted multiple catches during team period play.
-The South defense got takeways from Chris Henderson, who forced and recovered a fumble, and Taj Bickham after he intercepted a pass on the next-to-last play of the day.
-Jeffery Whatley accounted for the lone sack during team periods, although Bull Barge made 1½ stops behind the line while both Taji Stewart and Tyree Turner added solo tackles for loss.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On Monday's practice: "It was the last practice before classes, I thought it started off a little slow but the guys picked it up; we challenged them, they responded and I believe we got better and had a good day today.  It was the last full day of camp so there was an opportunity to not have as good a day as we wound up having, there was a lot of different stuff going on with students back on campus that could've got their minds off football."
-On his expectations for practice the rest of the week: "It's good that we're starting to prepare for Louisiana Tech because we have a lot of young guys playing, we'll need the time to get ready.  They show you a lot of different looks both offensively and defensively, so it's good to have that extra week to prepare."
-On what he saw after viewing film of the team's second scrimmage on Saturday: "The thing that I liked was that all the mistakes we made were things that we can correct, but there are things that we have to get corrected — alignment, assignment — that you would've hoped we would've knocked out by now.  All of that starts with communication, getting the signal from the sideline and making sure that guy to your right and your left knows.  There were a couple of communication issues that led to false starts and things of that nature.  But I saw that we are very capable of being explosive offensively, and the way the game is play nowadays you have to be explosive.  The old days of 17- and 18-play drives, you still want them but defenses are so complex now that if you're counting on those typically you're going to get caught behind the chains at some point.  You need that explosiveness, and I think through two scrimmages we've shown that we have that.  We need to eliminate the negative plays, we put the ball on the ground a couple of times and had too many turnovers the other day."

Up next: South returns to the Jaguar Training Center for a workout beginning at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
