UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/17

Date: 8/17
Time: 3:30-5 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Jamarius Way, Sr., WR, Belle Glade, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Way: "Today we had a day where we were doing a lot of learning and working on some situations, and I thought the intensity was pretty good.  All of the guys on offense really seemed to be locked in, but Jamarius Way really did a great job.  He had great energy, stayed locked in and was good on his executions, so I thought he had a really good day today."

Defensive Player of the Day: DJ Daniels, Jr., S, Riverview, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Daniels: "DJ Daniels made a really good play down in the red zone today with a pick.  He's getting better every day and more comfortable in what he's doing out on the field."

Play of the Day: During the lone 10-minute period of 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, Cephus Johnson used a pump fake to free Cade Sutherland for a 12-yard touchdown.  Another candidate for recognition was an interception by Daniels, who prevented another score when he won a battle with the intended receiver in the end zone.

Team period highlights: With the Jaguars practicing without pads for the first time since the second day of fall camp, there were no team periods on the day.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Friday's practice lasted just over 90 minutes rather than two hours like most previous workouts.
-The offense and defense worked separately during four different 10-minute periods after the opening half hour of the session.
-The day also included three different special teams periods highlighted by a 10-minute period at the midpoint of the workout focused on kickoff coverage.
-The skeleton passing period featured all offensive plays run from the defense's 25-yard line in.
-Cole Garvin found four different wideouts for scores during 7-on-7 drills, while Johnson also threw two touchdown passes.
-In addition to Daniels, Tobias Moss had an interception for the defense.
-Jalen Tolbert, David Gardner, Davyn Flenord, Jahmmir Taylor and Jamarius Way hauled in touchdown passes as well.
-Tolbert, Sutherland and Way each finished with multiple catches.
-During the period both A.J. DeShazor and Tyree Vines broke up passes.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the best thing he saw from the team in the second week of camp: "I loved the way the guys pushed through.  A lot of teams have hit a wall and backed up, this team pushed right on through the wall so I was very pleased with that.  We needed to because we have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be.  We had one day that wasn't great, but it was still a pretty good day.  I like the way this group has worked and how they pull for each other, they've been doing what we've asked of them; they are an unselfish group.  We're not doing all the little things right, but the effort is there."
-On what concerns him most as the second week of the preseason wraps up: "This is going to sound like 'coach speak' but it is making sure we eliminate turnovers and penalties.  I'll take aggressive penalties, but not stupid penalties like illegal procedure, not enough men on the line of scrimmage, two men in motion — things that we can control.  Defensively, it is tackling and eliminating explosive plays.  If you tackle well and don't let them throw it over your head then generally you eliminate those."
-On what he wants to see in Saturday's scrimmage: "I saw some guys make plays in the last scrimmage and we had several receivers make plays during the week, but I want to see us makes plays in the run game.  I think we had two or three explosive runs in the last scrimmage, I want to see more of those."

Up next: The Jags conclude the week with a scrimmage expected to last approximately two hours on campus, with the start slated for 10 a.m.
