Head coach Steve Campbell
On his overall thoughts on the scrimmage: "There were a lot of good things. Offensively we had some guys make some plays with the ones and the twos, I liked the way our receivers caught the football and had some good runs after the catch. I thought the quarterbacks executed the offense well for the most part, there weren't a whole lot of balls on the ground. Defensively our ones started off strong with a couple of three-and-outs early. Offensively we kept battling and battling, and sooner or later we made a play with the ones and kind of got rolling. I thought the second group offensively started fast and ran the ball a little better, Jalen Wayne had a play that got us going early. We had a couple of people make plays in the second group offensively, guys who could be ones. All in all it was a good day, there were a lot of positives on both sides to build off of."
On how to evaluate the first scrimmage of the spring: "By how hard we are playing — there were times when I thought we played really hard — how we respond to adversity and attention to detail. There are times when we are standing around and watching and that's not something you can snap your fingers and fix, that has to become habit because whenever you get tired you revert back to your habits. I think we've come a long way in practices, we still have a long way to go but I like the direction we're headed."
On the competition at quarterback: "All those guys have done some really good things, through the first eight practices every one of them have shown some really bright spots. Each one of them is doing some good things, and all of them have a play here or there where they are still learning the offense. It's going to be a good competition there, which is bringing out the best in all of them. It's a tight-knit group that pulls for each other and wants the best for each other, so competition is a good thing. Right now it's hard to say who the frontrunner is, I know that Cole and Dallas have played the most around here and have won some big games. Now it is a matter of learning and executing the offense, understanding what we are trying to get. There are a lot of things to evaluate before we can have a definitive answer, but all of them are working hard and have some things they do well."
Junior LB Bull Barge
On the team's first full scrimmage of the spring: "Today was great, the defense came out firing from the beginning. The last mini-scrimmage was our first time tackling, e were easing into it, but today we came out on fire. The offense started off a little slow and then they started building up their energy, and it turned into a great first scrimmage."
On being able to tackle: "As a linebacker, you don't just want to hit linemen all day, you want to hit the running backs and receivers. When you actually get to do it you are just so fired up that you're trying to hit everything. You don't want to hurt your teammates, but it is just so fun to finally get to hit that all your energy overwhelms you."
On how good he thinks the team can be: "I don't want to speak too early because we know people talk about it, but we feel like we have a team that is going to shock the world this year. We really believe that and think this is our year and our time."
Junior QB Cole Garvin
On Thursday's scrimmage: "I thought we looked good, it was fun. The defense did a really good job, then we stepped it up toward the end. Today was more fun than a regular practice day."
On what is different this spring: "I think we have a lot of energy, which is good for the team. We have some new stuff on offense, which we are getting on and collecting a lot faster; it was difficult at first, the first couple of practices were rough, but now it's just like second nature."
