UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/19

Date: 3/19
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Players of the Day: guards
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on the Jaguars' guards: "We had three guards — Roy Albritton, Rowan Godwin and Hadon Merchant — who pretty much rotated all day without coming out, they worked both sides.  Our guards really did a great job today."

Defensive Player of the Day: Riley Cole, R-Fr., LB, Oneonta, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Cole: "Riley is getting better every day.  We've put him in a new spot, moving him from inside linebacker out to 'Bandit,' and you can see things from him each practice — like rushing the passer — that are going to help this football team."

Play of the Day: Malik Stanley made a one-handed reception for a 28-yard pick up on the third snap of the final team period of the afternoon, although another candidate was Tobias Moss' interception on the first play of seven-on-seven passing drills when he leaped at the last minute to take the ball away from the intended receiver.

Team period highlights: There were three 10-minute team period on the day, with each alternating first- and second-down plays for the both the first- and second-team offensive units.

Miscellaneous Notes
-USA's offense recorded touchdown passes on the final play of half-line skeleton drills, the 7-on-7 period and the last team period of the day.
-Dallas Davis accounted for the first two after finding Parker Mason and Malik Stanley for scores, while Cephus Johnson connected with Kawaan Baker after the defense jumped offside giving the offense a free play to close practice.
-Evan Orth led Jag quarterbacks in the workout completing 8-of-9 passes in all periods, including finding Logan Morgan three times in a span of four snaps during the 7-on-7 passing drills period.
-Morgan paced South's receiving corps with seven catches, while Jordan McCray added six including one for a score from Johnson during skeleton passing drills.
-In addition to Moss, Jalen Thomson recorded a takeaway for the Jag defense with an interception during the half-line passing period.
-Moss added a pass break up on the next-to-last play of the day as well, while Travis Reed chipped in with a pair of passes defensed.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the team's workout to start the week: "It was hot today, I think we battled through it.  It was a good work day, now we need to come back tomorrow and have a good polish day because we won't be as physical since we will be in shells.  There were definitely some positives to build off of."
-On what he saw from Saturday's practice after watching film: "We had some guys make plays offensively, I was pleased with that.  Davyn [Flenord] made a play down the sideline and Jamarius [Way] made a catch down the field, and I thought Tra [Minter] and Maurice [Mayo] ran the ball well; we were also able to put some things together in the run game.  Defensively you could see we are not where we need to be tackling-wise, but I don't know that we need to tackle any more than we are right now.  I don't like to do a ton of tackling anyway in non-scrimmage situations, but we definitely need to improve there.  But I was pleased with the fact that our defense bowed up in the red zone and created a turnover."
-On what he hopes to see at the team's first full scrimmage Thursday: "We want there to be a lot of juice on Thursday.  We'll hopefully run close to 100 plays, as many as we can get, but we're just not very deep at some spots.  There is some anticipation as we move toward the scrimmage."

Up next: The Jaguars practice on consecutive days for the first time this spring when they return to the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility for a 3:30 p.m. workout on Tuesday.
