UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/15

Date: 3/15
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Pete Bennett, assistant coach, WR
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Coach Bennett: "I had some guys who did a good job but our guy of the day was Pete Bennett.  The wideouts have improved a bunch in four days, they are getting better with the details of their stuff.  Coach Bennett has done a great job, he has a lot of guys to coach with a lot of stuff to teach."

Defensive Player of the Day: the defensive front
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on the defensive front: "Our front did a lot better job of communicating and lining up in exactly what we want them to do and playing their correct technique.  I did notice Tyree [Turner] a couple of times today, he did some good stuff.  We still have a long way to go, but we are getting a little bit better every day."

Play of the Day: At the end of the first of two skeleton passing drill periods, Travis Reed made a diving, one-handed interception in the end zone.

Team period highlights: Alternating first-and second-down plays, the offense mixed run and pass calls in a pair of 10-minute periods to go along with a 10-minute passing period in between.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Four Jaguar quarterbacks combined to complete 14-of-18 pass attempts during team period play.
-Cade Sutherland led South's wide receivers in team drills with three receptions, with five other individuals — Kawaan Baker, David Gardner, Jordan McCray, Malik Stanley and Jahmmir Taylor — adding two catches apiece.
-Reed picked off a second pass during 7-on-7 drills at the goal line as well.
-Sean Grayer had both a solo sack — forcing a fumble on the play — and an assisted sack with Chris Henderson for the Jag defense, with Rocel McWilliams adding an unassisted sack as well.
-This was the Jaguars' second straight practice in full pads, although the defense once again was limited tackling.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the Jaguars' Thursday practice: "I thought the quarterbacks executed, we completed some balls down the field.  Cole hit a pass and Evan had a good series, but all the quarterbacks did some good things.  We getting better, making progress slowly but surely.  Early on I didn't think the tempo was great, but I like the way that the guys finished."
-On the installation of the new coaching staff's schemes the first week of the spring season: "It's been good, today was the last of the major install.  Now we'll go back and start trying to get better at some stuff.  Today we ran some stuff that we hadn't run before, so on Saturday we will hit all of it from day one, two, three and four and for the first time go back and start reviewing the stuff that we've put in.  The guys have retained it well, we have been throwing a lot at them with tempo, signals, units and formations; the whole ball of wax.  I think they've taken to it well."

Up next: The Jags wrap up the first full week of spring drills with a two-hour workout — which will include a mini scrimmage — Saturday that is slated to get underway on campus at 9:30 a.m.
