Opening Kick
• The Jaguars celebrate Homecoming weekend for the second year in a row against ULM.
• South has won each of its previous nine Homecoming contests, with the last four of those coming against Sun Belt Conference opponents.
• Four of USA's five Homecoming contests in league play have been decided by one score.
• Last year's victory over the Warhawks was the first Homecoming game to be decided by a double-digit margin since the Jags defeated Kent State, 38-21, on Oct. 19, 2013.
• The Jaguars have won five of their last six conference contests at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in November dating back to a 36-14 decision over ULM on Nov. 23, 2013.
• This is also South's annual Hall of Fame weekend, with the Class of 2018 featuring Nic Chisholm (men's 1995-98), David Freese (baseball 2005-06), Ernie Rosseau (baseball 1972-73) and Lindsay Schwartz (women's track & field, 2009-12).
South Alabama-ULM Series Notes
• Neither program has won consecutive contests since the series began in 2012.
• The home team has won each of the first four matchups.
• The winning squad has posted 30-plus points in every contest.
• Three of the four meetings have been decided by 10 or more points.
• In the first matchup in Mobile in 2013, the Jaguars set school game records that still stand today with 14 tackles for loss and nine sacks.
Notes From The Last ULM Meeting
• After recording eight total tackles, recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass, Jaguar safety Jeremy Reaves was selected the co-Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week.
• With 99 yards on 11 carries Xavier Johnson became South's all-time leading rusher in the contest, as he ended the game the first individual in program history with over 4,000 all-purpose yards after finishing play with 160.
• Jag S Tobias Moss set one career high and matched another after posting six stops and two passes defensed, respectively.
• Dallas Davis paced the Jaguar offense with a season-best 341 yards of total offense, with his performance including throwing a career-high three touchdowns.
• South's offense ended the contest with season-high figures in first downs (26), total offense (549 yds), average yards per play (8.1) and third-down conversion rate (58.3%).
Notes On Campbell's Coaching/Playing Career
• Campbell's 161-60 mark as a head coach includes going 33-15 over the last four years at Central Arkansas, where he guided the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances.
• He has led two programs to national championships — Delta (Miss.) State in 2000 at the NCAA Division II level and Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. to the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association crown.
• In his first 19 seasons, no team coached by Campbell finished below .500.
• Campbell has coached on the staffs of Pat Dye (Auburn graduate assistant, 1988-89) and Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State assistant, 2003).
• Campbell and Jaguar coordinators Kenny Edenfield and Greg Stewart were teammates on Troy's 1987 NCAA Division II national championship squad.
Last Line Of Defense
Senior Nigel Lawrence, in his first significant action since the Jaguars met Appalachian State on Sept. 29, had 10 stops at the half en route to a career-high 17 in the Arkansas State contest last time out. Not only was it the fifth time this year that the safety has paced South in stops — the most on the team — but the total was also the highest recorded by an individual in the Sun Belt this season.
Back-to-Back For Barge
Lawrence wasn't the only Jag to post a career-high tackle total against the Red Wolves as fellow senior Bull Barge was credited with 13 stops in Saturday's game. It was the second outing this fall that the pair have produced 10-plus tackles in the same contest — they also accomplished the feat in a 41-31 victory over Texas State on Sept. 15 — while marking the first time in his career that Barge has been credited with 10-plus tackles in consecutive games.
Giving His All
RB Tra Minter led all players with 88 yards on 17 carries — which included a career-long 36-yard rush in the third quarter — in the A-State game, and he also finished the day with a career-high-tying four catches matching a total recorded almost exactly one year earlier in a Nov. 4 meeting with Louisiana last fall. In addition to leading South's rushing attack in six of the last seven outings, it was the seventh contest this fall that the junior has recorded 100 or more all-purpose yards after he concluded the contest with 131 total.
McDonald Makes Three
A third member of the South defense had a career-high tackle figure after Khalil McDonald collected all seven of his stops in the opening half of the match-up with the Red Wolves. The performance came after the junior linebacker had posted eight stops in the previous five outings combined.
Stanley Scores
Malik Stanley's touchdown catch, which tied the A-State contest 7-7 less than nine minutes before the intermission, was his first since the final minute of South's game against Louisiana a year ago. He is now tied for 10th on South's career record list in the category — having recorded four since joining the program last fall — with teammates Kawaan Baker and Jordan McCray.
The Way To The End Zone
WR Jamarius Way also had his only catch against the Red Wolves go for a touchdown after he provided the final points of the contest with a five-yard reception with less than four minutes to go in the contest. It was his fourth of the campaign, as the senior not only took over the outright lead on the team in the category, it allowed him to move into the top 10 in the Jaguars' season record books.
Waitman Does Well On Busy Day
Corliss Waitman fell one kick shy of tying the game school record after punting nine times for a 43.4 yard average at A-State, with his effort including a season-best three kicks of 50-plus yards. The redshirt senior entered the top five on USA's season record list as he now has 16 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line in 2018, with nearly half of those coming as he has posted multiple such kicks in each of the last three contests. In four games at home this season, Waitman has averaged 43.88 per punt, a figure that is nearly two yards per kick better than his average for the year.
Nave Has Big Day
Coming into play redshirt freshman Gus Nave had posted four stops in five appearances since returning from an injury that ended his 2017 season prematurely. The cornerback surpassed that total against the Red Wolves by posting six stops — double his previous career high recorded Oct. 6 at Georgia Southern — while also adding a pass broken up.
Gaining Ground
The Jaguars gained 156 rushing yards in the Arkansas State contest, outgaining the Red Wolves by a yard in the process. It was the second time in the last three games that South has recorded more yards rushing than the opposition after being outgained on the ground in each of the first six outings this fall. One reason for the Jags' improvement in the run game has been play calling; last week marked the fourth contest in a row that USA has increased its rush attempts, and the third straight in which the unit has recorded a new season high in the category.
Flags In Pocket
After being flagged for eight or more penalties in a five-game span beginning Sept. 8 at Oklahoma State — a stretch that included three outings with 10-plus infractions — South has either equaled or set a new season low in the category each of the last three contests. That included being called for just six penalties in the matchup at A-State, the fewest committed by the Jaguars since incurring two in the 2017 season finale at New Mexico State.
