JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of South Alabama baseball team split a doubleheader with Arkansas State Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.
ASU (20-18, 8-9 SBC) defeated South Alabama (24-16, 11-6 SBC) 12-10 in game one before the Jaguars evened the series with a 12-2 win over the Red Wolves in game two.
"Thomas (Huston) has been great for us all year long," USA head coach Mark Calvi. "He didn't give us a great start, and the game revolves around pitching and defense. In the first game, we didn't get one of those first two that we needed – the pitching and defense part of it. The whole team battled. I give credit to Arkansas State; that hit some mistakes, took some walks and hit some good pitches. Thomas just didn't look like himself out there. We have a lot of belief in him, and he will be fine next week. I expect a much better outing next week; he will be good to go. But the kids fought until the end. I was proud of their effort. The walks and sloppiness in there were just too much to overcome.
"Game two was exactly the opposite. There were a lot of extra-base hits, some home runs, we took advantage of our outs and moved some guys along. We had some sacrifice flies and ground balls with men at third, dirtball reads and Randy (Bell) was really good. He was really aggressive with his fastball and located it really well. He mixed in his changeup and some curveballs in there, but for the most part he threw 80 percent fastballs tonight and located well and did a really nice job. It was a long day at the park and after losing a long first game like that, I credit our guys for the way they fought until the end. We really jumped out in game two and didn't look back the whole game or let the foot off the gas pedal. That takes some maturity and the right kind of guys to lose a game and then jump right back in to game two 40 minutes later and give a great effort. But they were allowed to have energy and have fight and do well because of that guy on the bump in the middle of the field; that's where it starts and stops. We were good one of the two games today, but the series is only two-thirds over and we have another game tomorrow. We have a lot of faith in (game three starter) Tyler Carr and who we have down in the bullpen behind him. Our pitchers believe in our hitters and our hitters believe in our pitchers. That's how it has to be. This is a team thing and these kids play really well together and get along well together. Tomorrow is a big game; it is the biggest game of the year. You would be fooling yourself to look at it any other way. Every pitch of every inning in every game matters, so that's how we approach tomorrow and we're looking for a good start out of Carr."
The series will conclude with the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday.
