MOBILE, Ala. – Southeastern Louisiana used a four-run third inning and five-run fifth to defeat the University of South Alabama baseball team 12-4 Tuesday at Stanky Field.

The Lions' 12 runs marked the most allowed by a Jaguar team this season. Eight SLU starters hit safely in the game, led by Jacob Seward who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Wells Davis went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI to lead the Jaguars at the plate.

SLU right-handed reliever Evan Hileman (3-0) tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to earn the win. USA left-hander Zach McMullen (0-2) allowed four unearned runs on three hits with one strikeout and four walks in 2 2/3 innings in the loss.

"We got outplayed tonight," USA head coach Mark Calvi said. "We got outpitched, and we got off to a bad start. You can't walk four or five guys and make errors and expect to beat a good team like Southeastern Louisiana. They played better than us tonight, but we'll move on and make some corrections to get ready for this weekend."

SLU (12-4) loaded the bases in the top of the third on a pair of walks with a fielding error on left-hander Zach McMullen sandwiched in between the two. Derrick Mount then delivered a two-out RBI single to center field for a 2-0 Lion lead. Seward followed with a two-run single back up the middle to double the SLU lead to 4-0.

USA (9-8) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third on a single by Colton Thomas and consecutive walks from Will Luft and Travis Swaggerty. But Mount induced an inning-ending groundout to second off the bat of Wells Davis to escape the jam and preserve a four-run Lion lead.

The Lions loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth following a one-out hit by pitch to Brennan Breaud, a single by Ryan Byers and a two-out walk by Carson Crites. Taylor Schwaner then drew a walk to score Breaud and push the SLU lead to 5-0.

The Lions doubled their lead a half-inning later in the top of the fifth. SLU opened the inning with three consecutive singles by Jacob Seward, Scottie Sanders and Evan Pace. Breaud then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Seward for a 6-0 Lion advantage. An RBI sacrifice bunt by Byers one batter later plated Sanders and extended the SLU lead to 7-0. Carson Crites followed with a two-run triple down the right field line for a 9-0 Lion lead. Schwaner then delivered a two-out RBI single to right field to extend the SLU advantage to 10-0.

USA loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth when Cam Cummings reached on a throwing error on SLU shortstop Breaud, a walk by Thomas and a single to left field by Luft. Swaggerty then drew a walk to score Cummings with the Jaguars' first run of the game. Wells Davis followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Thomas and cut the Lion lead to 10-2. SLU left-hander Tyler Booth induced a popup to shortstop off the bat of Carter Perkins for the second out of the frame before Brendan Donovan delivered a two-out, two-run double to the right-center gap that scored Luft and Swaggerty and cut the SLU lead to 10-4.

A one-out RBI triple to right-center field by Sanders pushed the Lion lead to 11-4 in the top of the eighth inning. A sacrifice fly to left field by Pace one batter later plated Sanders with the game's final run.

USA will return to action this weekend when it opens Sun Belt Conference play with Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga.
