MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – After Sunday's final round of the General Hackler Championship was cancelled due to inclement weather, the University of South Alabama men's golf team recorded its seventh consecutive top-10 result of the 2016-17 season.
The Jaguars posted a 295 team total in the first of two rounds Saturday en route to a 596 36-hole score, tying for ninth out of 15 schools in the field with East Tennessee State. Fifteenth-ranked Wake Forest won the title with a 15-under-par 561 two-round total, with No. 14 Kent State (571) and ninth-ranked Louisiana State (573) coming in second and third place, respectively.
Jason Mendel led USA with a 1-under-par 143 score to tie for seventh out of 84 competitors, earning the third top-10 finish of his career. Rasmus Karlsson posted a 36-hole 148 total to end up in a tie for 40th, with Sylas Elliott tying for 60th at 152 and Drew Cooke tied for 64th place one shot behind the junior. Peter Staalbo was tied for 75th in the individual standings with a 158 score over two rounds.
The Demon Deacons' Will Zalatoris claimed medalist honors with a 9-under-par 135 total, as just eight players broke par over 36 holes.
South will next be in action on Sunday, March 19, when plays starts at the Seahawk Intercollegiate hosted by UNC-Wilmington.
