WACO, Texas – Baylor used a five-run fourth inning to defeat the University of South Alabama baseball team Sunday at Baylor Ballpark and secure a three-game series sweep.
BU (8-0) jumped out to a three-run lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double by Tucker Cascadden, and an RBI single to center field by Steven McLean to push the BU lead to 3-0.
USA (4-3) answered on a solo home run to right field by Adam Wolfe to cut the Baylor lead to 3-1.
The Bears responded with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI fielder's choice to center field off the bat of Kameron Esthay for a 4-1 advantage. Baylor then added three runs one inning later on an RBI double down the left field line by T.J. Raguse, an RBI double to center field from Shea Langeliers, an RBI single to left field by Davis Wendzel and a two-run double down the left field line by Josh Bissonette to take a 9-1 lead.
South Alabama added its second run of the game in the top of the sixth on a two-out solo home run to right-center field by Wells Davis to cut the Baylor lead to 9-2.
Adam Wolfe led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to left-center field, his second of the game and the season, to cut the Jaguar deficit to 9-3.
South Alabama added the game's final runs in the top of the eighth. Will Luft led off the inning with a triple down the right field line, and scored one batter later on an RBI groundout to shortstop off the bat of Jared Barnes to cut the BU lead to 9-4. Later in the inning, Wolfe delivered his third home run of the game – a three-run shot to right-center field – for the final runs of the contest.
Wolfe went 3-for-4 with three home runs and a career-high five RBI and three runs scored to lead the Jaguars at the plate. Luft finished 2-for-4 with a triple and one run scored, and Eddie Paparella went 2-for-2 with one double. Langeliers went 2-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bears offensively.
BU left-hander Cody Bradford (2-0) allowed two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in six innings pitched to earn the win. Jaguar southpaw Zach McMullen (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits with a strikeout and three walks in 2 2/3 innings in the loss. Jaguar left-hander Thomas Huston tossed 4 2/3 scoreless relief innings, and allowed just one hit while issuing one walk and tying a career high with three strikeouts.
"Thomas (Huston) was very good," USA head coach Mark Calvi said. "He had three pitches for strikes, he worked fast, he got his leadoff guys out and was able to throw some offspeed in fastball counts. He was very effective and efficient. I thought he did a nice job. He gave our team a chance to come back and win the ballgame; we were there at the end but it just didn't happen. Moving forward, Thomas will pitch more.
"Our guys played hard all weekend. When you play a team like Baylor that is solid all over, you can't give away bases. We walked too many guys this weekend, we didn't get our leadoff outs and we didn't get ahead. When you have a very balanced team like Baylor does, they take advantage of some holes; we gave them too many holes and they took advantage and pulled away, and it was too hard to catch up. Our guys fought until the end, but we need to be better on the mound. We had too many cracks in our pitching and defense this weekend to take a series from a very good team like Baylor, much less one game."
South Alabama will return to action Tue., Feb. 28, when it hosts New Orleans at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.Â
