WICHITA, Kan. - The University of South Alabama women's tennis team fell to Wichita State, ranked No. 35 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, 4-0 Friday at the Wichita Country Club.
The Jags dropped to 8-3, while the Shockers improved to 5-4.
"It was a tough day against a good Wichita State team," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser. "Sometimes these matches can snowball on a team when playing indoors, and that's what happened today."
In doubles,
Fatima Bizhukova and
Gabriela Porubin defeated sophomore
Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) and senior
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) 6-0 at No. 1.
Ting-Ya Hsu and
Tanaporn Thongsing clinched the doubles point for WSU by dropping senior
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and sophomore
Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) 6-3 on court No. 3.
"I thought we competed and fought extremely hard, but today was definitely not our day," Keyser said.
Bizhukova opened singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Matuskova at No. 4, and
Giulia Guidetti followed up with a 6-2, 6-2 win against sophomore
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) on court No. 1. Porubin secured the victory for Wichita State by defeating senior
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
"The big challenge will be to turn the page on this one quickly and get ready for a great opportunity to get better tomorrow," said Keyser.
The Jaguars return to action Saturday at noon to face Oklahoma.
